" C'est d'abord la victoire du collectif. Pour la premi�re fois de son histoire, Festina s'adjuge
un contre-la-montre par �quipes. Sans les ennuis m�caniques de Gilles Bouvard, nous aurions pu
creuser un �cart plus important". Richard Virenque, le chef de file de Festina n'a pas cach� sa
satisfaction apr�s la victoire de sa formation lors de la 3e �tape, un CLM
par �quipes de 19,1km entre Berre et Velaux (!), synonyme de maillot jaune pour Emmanuel Magnien.
It is first of all, a team victory. For the first time in its history, the Festina team won a tem
TT. Without the mechanical troubles suffered by Gilles Bouvard, we would have been able to make a
much bigger difference. Richard Virenq, team leader of Festina did not conceal his satisfaction
after their victory in the 3rd satge a TTT of 19,1km between Berre and Velaux where Emmanuel
Magnien took over the yellow jersey.

Sous un vent violent, Festina a mis � profit une seconde moiti� de parcours assez s�lective pour
tirer son �pingle du jeu et devancer l'�quipe italienne Batik qui s'�tait pourtant adjug�e le
meilleur temps interm�diaire. "Nous pouvons aller tr�s haut", l�che un Virenque optimiste et
confiant. Jeudi matin, l'Italien Mario Cipollini, d�ja vainqueur la veille du trac� initial, a
jou� les r�cidivistes en faisant mouche au sprint � Rognac.
In a violent wind, Festina took advantage of a more difficult second half to outdistance the
Italian formation of Batik who had the fastest time over the first half. We can go much higher
said an optimistic and confidant Virenque. Thursday morning, Mario Cipollini, already victor the
previous day, came back again to take sprint at Rognac.

Isn't Mario Cipollini known for his sprinting? What team is he on? I cannot remember from
team lists that have been posted.

Invit� de derni�re heure (il a remplac� le Finlandais Lauma, malade), Emmanuel Magnien a remport�
cette 24e �dition du Tour Med' pour deux petites secondes d'avance sur l'Italien Bartoli. C'est
le Russe Gontchenkov qui s'est impos� dans la derni�re �tape entre Hy�res et Marseille, devan�ant
Bartoli et Magnien. Le coureur de la Festina triomphe gr�ce au jeu des bonifications mais peut
aussi remercier son �quipe, dont la victoire lors du CLM par �quipes de jeudi fut d�terminant.
Invited at the last moment to replace the injured Finn, Lauma, Emmanuel Magnien won the 24th TdMed
by the small margin of 2 seconds over the Italian Bartoli. The Russin Gontchenkov won the final
stage which took the riders from Hyeres to the famous church of Notre Dame de la Garde which
dominates the city of Marseilles. He lead Bartoli and a surprising Magnien over the line. The
Festina rider triumphed thanks to the bonus gane, but can also thank his team whose decisive win
in the TTT on Thursday was determinant.
As for the query about "does it suit the sprinters?" - the first 3 stages are up and down the Med
coast from Beziers near the Spanish border to Antibes, close to the Italian border. Although
there are a few bosses, a good sprinter with a good team can get back and win, which is why Il Re
Leone was OK for a while. The next stage starts through the Esterel and Maures coastal mountains
and finishes on Mt Faron overlooking Toulon harbour which has 16% stretches. Hyeres to Marseille
is pretty much the same with the Espigoulier and the Sainte-Baume, and the Gineste before dropping
into the Phocean city. Even then it's not over because the in-city climb to the cathedral is
pretty evil. Take your own opinion as to whether the race suits sprinters ...

Rod MacFadyen went back to the UK from Geneva. He turned into a skin-suited poseur who winds 53 x
12 up and down motorways behind trucks. He tends to talk a lot about 7 kg. bikes and drops
Campagnolo into the most mundane conversation.
Alan Paxton caught an evil touch of possibly rheumatic fever or something like it and was KO for a
long time. Living in amongst the inhospitable climate of Scotland is bad enough at the best of
times. He has a short duration post in Pisa (Italy) and has threatened to make some appearances
on the Cote.
Rod Widdowson is suffering from overwork and undermotivation. He says he likes Edinburgh, but
hates cold and wet, which does not really compute. His main problem is that he has sampled the
delights of the South of France and cannot get back there.
John Wilson from Ireland, who was the longest serving contractor for DEC in the history of the
Universe, finally ran out of time and left to freelance. He was bitten by the urge to become an
aging Mick Jagger and plays in a Rock Group in between doing a bit of work to keep body and soul
together.
Rob Rowlands is suffering from an overdose of family - with 3 young children, he has very little
time - but being as he is, he comes out and thrashes and frequently gets a dose of the dooms. But
again, being as he is, he never complains.
That leaves me - The Old Codger who gets out when he can, and this year plans 1200 km in 7 days
with the AVA Nice and his Antibes clubmates, plus the brevets and sportifs which are run at
weekends.

-Bill, still here in Washington DC, cycling only when 10C < temp < 35C.
Oops, that would be 50 F and 95 F, hmm, better make that 32C. Spoiled,
like so many others, by having cycled three years in the south of
France, and still hoping to get back some day for another vacation at
least.

I'm currently teaching Lee how to speak Cockney, but he thinks it's easier for him to learn
French!! He's definitely into "feastin' 'is minces" and "takin' a quick butchers", but "gettin'
the ole acid from the trouble" is a bit much for him.
As you so rightly say however, "there are a few 'ills on the way".
