Does anyone out there have a child/children that have an under-bite? My three year old went to the dentist for the first time a couple weeks ago and was told by our dentist that she had great teeth, but she had an under-bite and couldn't be treated for it until she was 4. I was curious as to what to expect for her and what will she to do. I hear that she'd have to wear a strap to bed. That should go over good. thanks

I am sure they have new ways of doing things these days, but I had an under bite when I was a kid. I had to have four teeth pulled and had what was called a positioner that I had to where for 4 hours a day (it is simular to what boxers put in their mouths during a fight, but it teaches you the correct way to bite down) Then I had braces for 6 years to correct the problem. It was a long drawn out process and at times very uncomfortable. Alot of the problem is from the way the jaw is formed. I am sure they must have other ways of correcting it now, this was back in the mid 70's. My .02 cents Kathy

My son had an underbite which was treated when he was 6 or 7. The treatment included a removable appliance worn on the top teeth to push them forward (you can't do this until the second teeth are in) and a chin strap worn to bed each night. This proceure can take as little as a few months or as much as a year. It was very successful with my son. He had a speech problem with the underbite and that corrected itself. It is possible that the process might have to done again as the all of the second teeth come in and the jaw grows during the teen years. We went to an excellent orthodontist in Chelmsford MA.

My sister had a very severe underbite with a jaw that jutted forward. It was determined that the typical treatments such as braces would be ineffective and that surgery would be necessary. They waited until she was sixteen and the bone resonably well formed. The operation consisted of the jaw being broken in three places, some bone removed, the whole thing repositioned and her jaw wired shut for 10 weeks (liquid diet) for recovery. It was major surgery, but her case was severe. The only scarring is two 1" scars, one on either side of her jaw, tucked up under the jawline so they are barely visible. Her case was probably at the severe end of the spectrum and also a while ago (1968). She came through it with a perfect bite and absolutely no residual problems. Norma |
