Has anyone had a child come home on either NG (tube) feedings or with a
gastrostomy? My son, Brad, who is 5 months old is scheduled to have
his ostomy reconnected during this latest hospitalization (we've only
had him home 13 days out of the 5 months), but they are proposing that
he come home with a gastrostomy. That is where they surgically put a
tube into his stomach so that he can be fed through that all night.
The other choice is the NG tube down his nose, but his pediatrician is
pushing for the gastrostomy. We're not even sure that he will need to
be tube fed when he comes home, but the doctors want to have something
there in case he needs it to grow.
I was wondering if anyone had dealt with a gastrostomy, and about how
long it stayed in. I'm also curious about the procedure used to take
it out, and how the healing takes place since it's been explained that
there is no surgery needed to remove (like a CVL which Brad has had
before). If anyone has any information, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
Cathy

Cathy, I never had to go through this for a child. but a friend of
mine's son had to have a gastorstomy done due to the severity of his
colities. My mother has a tube in her stomach so she can do her kidney
dialis from home and the doctors told her to remove the tube isn't as
bad as putting it in. All they have to do is make a small insision and
slip the tube out. So I guess that is all they will hve to do for your
son.
I feel for you and your son for having to go through all of this at
such a young age (5 months). I hope and pray that everything goes ok
for him.
Please keep us posted.

Cathy,
One thing I forgot to mention in my mail to you is that you might also
enter your note in VMSZOO::MEDICAL.

Thanks for the help. The surgeons do not want to do the gastrostomy
when they reconnect the ostomy since they don't know that he will need
it. If it turns out that Brad must have one, they will do it at a
later date.
The surgery is now scheduled for Friday, but since he still has an
oxygen requirement from the virus he caught while being in the
hospital, it may get postponed til next week. They will be deciding
tomorrow so that I can let my blood donor know if he should go in or
not. I just want to get this all over with and have Brad get better.
Regards,
Cathy
