Note 599.25 Teething early? 25 of 33

Without going back and reading all the replies listed here,
does anyone know if diaper rash is associated with teething?
My daughter is six months old and while she's drooled up a
storm since she was two months old, she's just suddenly
gotten a diaper rash (never had one up until now)
I'd like to try and attribute it to teething since the
only other answer I would have would be that her daycare
provider left her in a wet diaper all day - which wouldn't
make me happy.
Anyone else have symptoms? Other than the rash, she really
hasn't acted any differently.

-< diaper rash and teething >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When my daughter was teething she always got a diaper rash. Right
before the tooth came in (within a couple of days) she would get a
severe rash - raised, red, and bumpy! It looked very painful yet it
didn't seem to bother her except if we used wipes on her. Our pedi
said that we should use a warm wash cloth to clean her up. The rash
would disappear within a couple of days. One thing that we did notice
with this type of rash is that it would appear suddenly and leave
suddenly - there was no period of it gradually getting better or worse
- it just happened.
The explanation that our pedi gave was that the saliva and mucous are
very acidic and can cause irritation to the skin (you may notice a rash
or irritation on the chin as well). The saliva/mucous are swallowed
and may irritate the skin when a bowel movement or urine touch the
skin.

Hmmmm...
That's why I was curious. My daycare provider says she
changed Cassidy at 1:45. My boyfriend picked her up at
4:00 (we live across the road a little ways) and when he
went to change her she was red from belly button to bum
and screamed bloody murder when he tried to use a wipe.
He did get a warm face cloth and used that but you could
see her tense up. Her skin was VERY red, chafed and dry.
)8 We soaked her in Aveeno that night which seemed to
help quite a bit.
That's why I was concerned when, in a two hour span, she
had suddenly gotten this diaper rash. It does seem to
be better now so I guess I'll just have to wait and see
if a tooth comes out of this scenario.
Thanks!
/Kim

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd also recommended lube-ing her up good with something like
Desitin at each diaper change. I usually use Lotrimin (I think
that's it, it's a prescription med for yeast infections) then
cover it with Desitin. The diaper rash ointment protects the
skin and makes the next diaper change go smoother (especially
poops!).

There are many health care professionals out there that will say
that all kinds of symptoms we regularly associate with teething
children are "Nothing to do with teething". It is evident these
professionals have never had children!
On the other hand, it is always wise to monitor the symptoms, that
you do experience and put down to teething, for them either
not improving in relatively short order, or more symptoms occuring
and then to arrange a dr. visit. Also, if you are not happy about a
symptom call the Dr. Always err on the side of safety.

Gack! I hate Desitin (I can never get it off my hands, and I don't much
care for the smell). I do use it when necessary, but fortunately my kids
rarely have had diaper rash.
One thing that causes that "now you see it, now you don't" type of
diaper rash for my kids is orange juice. I'm sure other foods could
do it, too, depending on what your child is sensitive to. You might
want to check whether your child had anything new to eat or drink that
day.

If you don't like the "fish smell" of Desitin, try plain Zinc Oxide!
Works just the same, and no smell!

Lotrimin is no longer available only by prescription. I used to buy it
by the truckload for my girls diaper rash, but now I buy the
over-the-counter gyne-lotrimin (actually I wish it was still available
by prescription - much cheaper when PCS pays!). I also hate Desitin
and can't get it off my fingers.
Has she been on any anti-biotics? My girls always get yeast infections
when they've been on anti-biotics. Yogurt helps too...

re: getting Desitin off your fingers
I don't much like the stuff myself, but I'm sure that Jason would
trade my moderate discomfort for his flaming diaper rash in a second!
I find it helps to wipe my fingers off on the inside of his diaper
(disposable) just before taping it up. Soap and water seems to
clean up the rest fairly easily; although the odor hangs on for
awhile.

It may be teething. It may also be some food that she is allergic to
or irritates her system. Anything acidic might cause they type of rash
you described to appear suddenly.
In our case - yogurt caused these rashes. I had read that yogurt often
helps to prevent yeast rashes. So the more rashes she got, the more yogurt
I fed her, the more rashes she got... Unfortunately it took weeks for me
to realize what was happening. It has been several months since I stopped
feeding her yogurt, and my daughter hasn't had a diaper rash since. As an
aside - my pedi recommends that I try yogurt again. He says she has
probably outgrown her sensitivity to it by now.

| 1135.2 | find out which kind of rash | ELMAGO::PHUNTLEY | Mon Sep 16 1991 17:28 | 11 | |
My son, too, got diaper rashes while teething, and my pedi was one
of those who said there was no biological reason why teething would
cause diaper rash but it did!! What worked best for us was caldesene
powder and fresh air time without the diaper. To this day my son
has a sensitive behind and occasionally gets rashes (he's 2) and
will ask for medicine for his bottom. What has helped me is a book
with clear pictures of different types of rashes (one of the child
care books but not sure which) so that if it is yeast I can call
the doctor for a prescription of monostat.

| 1135.3 | Rash everywhere!!! | FSOA::EFINIZIO | Wed Sep 18 1991 16:23 | 23 | |
My poor little guy has had the worse rash going. He not only has
it on his front, but also on his behind. I couldn't even give him
a bath the last couple of nights. Our Dr. prescribed the yeast
ointment, but it hasn't been doing to much.
Matthew's just about 15 months (my God already!) and does tend
to love pasta, which I probably give him 5-7 nights. He doesn't do
well with meats at all...and hates all kinds of veggies (I've tried
everything). So I'm not sure if the pasta (acid) is adding to
the rash. I do know that he's teething...both hands are always
in his mouth. He also drinks a lot of apple juice during the day.
He has had very loose bowel movements, so I'm not sure what
its all attributed to. Any thoughts?? Should I not be giving
him the pasta...even though it's the only thing that he eats!
My daycare person mentioned that soaking him in baking soda in
the tub is good....
It's so hard being a first time mother sometimes!!!

| 1135.4 | cut down on the apple juice | TOLKIN::SANTAMARIA | "Cassidy's Mom" | Wed Sep 18 1991 16:28 | 4 |
Try cutting down on the apple juice. I find that Cassidy has loose and
more frequent BMs when she drinks a lot of apple juice - even when I
water it down. I've pretty much cut out all apple juice and I've found
that she has diaper rashes less frequently also.

| 1135.5 | What else?? | FSOA::EFINIZIO | Wed Sep 18 1991 16:43 | 7 | |
What do you give her besides apple juice? I usually send
him to daycare with 6 bottles, 3 juice, 3 milk. I don't want
to give him anything acidic. My daycare person mentioned
coolaid...but I cringe at the thought....

Lately I've been getting the Dole Fruit Juice (can't remember the exact
name) or Chiquita also puts out several juice combinations. Both are
100% juice. The Chiquita are only in the dairy section but the Dole
juices can be bought either in the dairy section or in the bottle.
Cassidy likes the Dole Peach juice and the Chiquita tropical punch.

re .5:
My kids mostly drink just milk or water. Their interest in juice comes
and goes. If your child has trouble with the juice, why not just send
water? (or an empty bottle that your day care provider can fill from
the faucet) The suggestion of Koolaid would make me cringe, too!

Ellen,
You could try diluting the juice (1/2 water, 1/2 juice)
to cut down on Matthew's intake. Steven never gets full
strength juice.
Are you putting tomato sauce on the pasta? The pasta itself
isn't acidic, it's the tomato sauce on it. You could try
giving him pasta and butter instead. Some kids (including
mine) prefer it this way.
In our experience, the rashes and loose bowel movements
were sure signs of a new tooth...
We've also cut down on the amount of fruit we give Steven
since it loosens his bowel movements alot. Does Matthew
get any other fruit besides juice during the day?
Cornstarch in the bath helps too. If you can let him run
around without a diaper for awhile that may heal the rash.
I hope this helps!

| 1135.9 | try a blow-dryer | CARLIN::FLEURY | Thu Sep 19 1991 08:49 | 13 | |
Lots of air timemay help. Running around without a diaper as .-1 suggested
would be great. My pedi also suggested using a hair-dryer on a warm (not
hot ) setting because warm air will help heal a rash even more qhickly than
room-temp air. When Michelle was getting lots of rashes I would "blow-dry"
her bottom every night after her bath. I would place my hand on her thigh
and direct the air directly at my hand most of the time - that way I would
know if it got to hot for her skin.
As far as pasta - how about pasta with cheeze? Real cheeze - not the fake
stuff you buy in a box. Isn't cheeze supposed to be "binding"?

I've had good luck treating Cory's diaper/yeast rashes with BalmX. It
worked better on his yeast infection than the prescription ointment
that the doctor suggested.
I usually find it at CVS with the diaper rash ointments.

My son just recently had a major rash all over his body. We took him
to the doctor's and were told it was a virus that would be contagious
for 5 days from the spots showing up. It looked like a major diaper
rash all over. He also had loose bowel movements, and the doctor
suggestion putting him on just soy based formula for a week.
He was 11 months at the time and eating people food, so I was alittl
worried about giving him just formula. But it did go away.
If you haven't already, I would bring him to see the doctor.
If you have, try bananas like the previous reply stated. That always
tightens them up.
Good luck,
Sheila

| 1135.13 | jello water as an alternative maybe | PCOJCT::REIS | God is my refuge | Thu Sep 19 1991 13:56 | 10 |
What kind of diapers do you use? I used disposables and found out that
my daughter was allergic to certain brands and would be covered front
and rear with a rash within a short time of putting them on her. As
stated previously, let him go without a diaper when you can. When my
kids were babies, I would make jello and add enough water to make 2
qts. of "juice". It was just sweet enough that it didn't taste
completely like water. Of course this was almost 17 years ago and I
never mentioned it to my ped. so I don't know how that would go over.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I've always used the same
diapers...Luvs, and haven't had this kind of bout with diaper
rash.
I think I may try Balmx as Terry suggested. I sent Matt off
today with diluted HC, but don't know how well that will go
over...
And yes Lin...he's an italian! He loves the sauce on his pasta!
He can't be fooled!
Also too, I just made an appointment tomorrow with the Dr. It's
gone on now for 7 days...(he prescribed the yeast med. on the
phone).
Walk around naked! He'd love it...but my rugs wouldn't. The one
time I decided to let him do it, I found him playing in a puddle
of pee!!!
Thanks for all the suggestions...guess I should enter something
in the finger food note about his eating habits!

I second the use of BALMEX. My doctor recommended it and I have found
it highly successful. Also it works quite well on adult heat rashes.
