| I think it is to maintain the lining of the uterus so that she doesn't
lose the embryo.

1070.2 | it helps form the placenta | JAWJA::HERNDONK | | Tue Aug 06 1991 16:34 | 14 |

I believe a woman produces it for 3 weeks (starting around 9-10 wks?)
to help the placenta form.....after that I believe progesterone is
present later on to help start contractions ???? (I think)
I think that is why some women will miscarry at around 12-14 weeks...
they did not have enough hormones to produce the placenta properly.
And, thus, had a spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) which is usually
around 2 weeks after the embryo has died.
Please add any additional info if I'm wrong...I'm trying to remember
what my book said....

1070.3 | it supports the pregnancy | MEMIT::GIUNTA | | Wed Aug 07 1991 09:27 | 10 |
| Progesterone is needed to help the uterine lining maintain the
pregnancy. I had to take it for the first trimester of my pregnancy
because I have a luteal phase defect which means that I don't produce
enough progesterone to create a lush enough uterine lining to support a
pregnancy to term. It is very common to use progesterone for the first
few weeks after becoming pregnant from some infertility treatments (I
had my twins from GIFT), so it is possible that she had one of those
procedures done where they recommend progesterone be used. I also went
back on it for a few weeks when I spotted in my 13th week to help
continue the pregnancy.

1070.4 | I took it.. | WMOIS::ALEXANDER_D | | Wed Aug 07 1991 10:07 | 7 |
| I too took progesterone while undergoing fertility treatments.
It is to help build up the lining of the uterus so the embryo
will attach better.
I took shots but, it also can be taken with sapositories too.

1070.6 | My experiences | JAWS::TRIPP | | Fri Aug 09 1991 14:17 | 29 |
| I too did the progesterone routine. I was advised to take it from day
18 of my cycle, or start three days after the day I believed I had
ovulated, if that wasn't my 18 day. I too have Ludeal Phase Defect.
My only complaint was that once you started taking progesterone,
whether or not you had managed to conceive, I had a mild upset stomach
much like morning sickness. I also hated the mess the suppositories
created after insertion (trying not to be too graphic here).
I was told that if the progesterone isn't there almost at the moment of
conception not only might it produce a spontaneous abortion, but also
could cause a "blighted ovum", which is where conception occurs, but
the fetus doesn't develop.
By not taking the progesterone under these conditions, what you are
doing is mimicing the effects of the RU 48(?)(abortion pill), That pill
basically deprives the embryo of progesterone causing it to abort.
I've had one miscarriage this way, since it was not a planned pregnancy
and I didn't get to the drugstore in time to get the suppositories. I
wanted that baby, it's just too bad I didn't know I was pregnant
sooner.
Speaking of progesterone suppositories, I live in Worcester County (MA)
and have found Monahan's pharmacy on West Boylston St Worcester to the
*THE ONLY* source for these.
Has anyone else found a source for these besides Monahan's?
I just hate going there for a lot of reasons like their attitude, and
the location is ify at best and inconvienient to get to. They refuse
to mail them out.

1070.7 | Boulevard Pharmacy | WMOIS::ALEXANDER_D | | Fri Aug 09 1991 15:55 | 9 |
| I get my Progesterone injections from Rossetti's Boulevard
Pharmacy on Shrewsbury St. in Worcester. Not sure if they
have the suppositories, but you could give them a call
(508) 755-5972. They are real nice to me. I have to drive
from Gardner about 35 miles away, but they are so pleasant
that I don't mind.
Good Luck,

1070.8 | try CVS | MEMIT::GIUNTA | | Mon Aug 12 1991 10:19 | 3 |
| I used to get my progesterone from the CVS in Acton, so I would
imagine that other CVS pharmacies would also have it. Call around and
ask.
