1069.0. "Take the kids to see the butterflies" by DDIF::FRIDAY (CDA: The Holodeck of the future) Tue Aug 06 1991 11:24
If you're looking for something to do on a rainy day
try taking the kids to Papillon Park, "The Butterfly Place".
This is the first living butterfly complex in the North
East. There's a huge atrium (3100 sq ft) filled with tropical
flowering plants that form an environment for what must be
hundreds of butterflies and moths of various types, all
flying around freely. There's a path through it, with benches
for sitting, so you can be right among the butterflies. You
can watch them feed, mate, lay eggs, and even take their first
flight.
If you don't want to be with the butterflies, there's also
a large observation room with display cases containing living
butterflies and moths in various stages of development. There's
also a gift shop that even sells butterfly-oriented gifts,
including chrysalises, cocoons, and caterpillars that you can
hatch yourself. Outside there's picnic tables.
The people who run this are very friendly and informative.
And they encourage you to bring your camera and take pictures.
Hours are: April 15 through Aug 31: 9-6
Sept 1 through Oct 12 10-5
Admission: Adults $5, Seniors and children between 3 and 12 are $4.
Phone: (508) 392-0955
Directions: Approx. 40 miles from Boston. Take exit 34 on Route
3. Head Southwest, past Flint's corner (on your left). Bear
left at the fork shortly afterwards. Papillon Park is maybe a mile
or so down the road on your right, at 120 Tyngsboro Road.

| I just called them; a little amplification-- they're open 7 days a
week, 9:30 to 6:00 (through August 31). Sept. 1 - Oct 12, hours as
stated in .0 (10:00 - 5:00), still 7 days a week.
Seniors are defined as 65 and older; kids under 3 have free admission.
Sounds good!

| Highly recommended for adults; kids may not have the patience to sit
and watch, which is the best way to see the butterflies.

1069.3 | Kids like it too | MIVC::MTAG | | Wed Aug 07 1991 12:27 | 9 |
| I have not gone yet, but my neighbor has brought her kids there
twice, the youngest being just 3. He loved it! The girls are
grammar school age and also liked it. I've suggested it as a trip
for my daughter's daycare since there's not a whole lot to do in
this area (compared to Boston) for field trips. Papillon Park has
also been written up in the local papers and do welcome groups
coming in on field trips.
