1062.0. "Part-time Daycare for Very Young Children?" by BOSOX::MKELLY () Thu Aug 01 1991 16:44

I'm sure this type of request has already been asked before in this
file, but I really didn't have time time to search through. I hoping
    for some help, suggestions,..........anything!

My wife and I have had the luxury of being able to work different
shifts these past years, avoiding any type of child care (of course
there have been times when we'd have to get a sitter for a few hours).

Now, my hours are changing to more solid 2nd shift hours
(2:30-11:00pm). My wife works from 7:00-4:00pm, and takes about one
hour to get home. My problem is the 2 1/2 to 3 hours that my two
children (Brendan, 2 years, and Meghan, 10 months) will need to be
    taken care of!

I've already started spreading the word around to my neighbors (I'm
hoping one will be able to help out 1 day a week), and I'm sure my
parents will be able to do 1 day (the problem here is that we live
about 40 miles away, and I'm really not looking forward to making this
trip more than twice a week).

I'm thinking about daycare, but would they accept two children, one
being so young, AND will they accept them for only three hours a day?

I live in Methuen, Ma. so if anyone has any advise or
    suggestions............ I'm all ears!

    Thanks,
    Mike.

If you are interested in centers, there are some out there. I use one
in Nashua for hourly care - I have the same situation as you -- a two
hour overlap of shifts. My kids are both older (6 and 4), but this
place does take older infants. I found it very difficult to get
someone to 1) come to the house for those short hours, 2) want to do
part-time care in their home especially since the hours needing
coverage were also the typical after school hours.

Have you considered a high-school student - preferrably one not
interested in sports activities (we had a problem with this one)?

Good luck - it is tough!

My daycare provider takes care of 2 part-time kids every afternoon when
the parents' shifts overlap. No problem. The only difficulty I see is
that your time runs late - until 7 pm. Maybe you can find an older
caregiver who takes kids in and doesn't have any youngsters at home to
feed dinner. Your kids could get dinner there and then be brought home
and put to bed. A lot of caregivers have lost business due to the
recession, so you are in a good bargaining position.

Digital's contracted Childcare referral services are very helpful. I'd
go down through the list of Methuen-area providers and ask if anyone is
interested. You can also inquire locally, such as at church. If all
else fails, a newspaper ad would surely bring responses, maybe even
some right in your neighborhood. Don't plan on driving the kids for
more than a few minutes when they're tired at that hour.

Good luck - it will work out just fine, I'm sure!

MODERATOR REMINDER:

Please keep your answers general. Do *not* recommend specific places or
people in this notestring. If you wish to recommend for or against any
daycare provider/babysitter, then do so in EMAIL or by phone.

I am changing the title of this note to make it less like the "Babysitting
Needed" note string (3.*).

    Thank you.

How about calling the local high school (I know they are not in active
session right now, but...) and talking to someone there about putting
in a request for part-time after school babysitting...??? I remember
when I was back in school teenagers were always looking for
after-school work, and could go down to the guidance office and see
    what they had to offer.

    Just an idea...
    Good Luck

Re: .4 - Also try the same with a senior citizen center. I found my
first sitter thru a friend who was part of a senior's sewing circle.
One of the women in her group was interested in doing part-time
    childcare. Worked out quite well.

I just want to thank all of you for your suggestions and help. I took
your advice, and spoke to one of the priests at our chuch. He gave me
the name of person who takes children, part time only (it seems like
this person was MADE for me), and is a very dependable person. I spoke
to her this morning and she has agreed to watch my children two days
out of the week, and my neighbor is going to watch them the other days!

I can't believe it's working out so well! My wife and I are going to
meet the person this weekend and talk with her. I have a feeling
    everything will be just fine.

    Thanks again for everything.

    Mike.
