1037.0. "Parent/daycare provider conference" by NOVA::WASSERMAN (Deb Wasserman, DTN 264-1863) Thu Jul 18 1991 17:29

This month's issue of Working Mother has an article discussing how to
have a good relationship with your family daycare provider. One of the
suggestions they had was to have annual or semi-annual conferences with
your provider to discuss your child's progress. This sounds like an
interesting idea, kind of like parent-teacher conferences in elementary
school. Does anyone do this? What type of things do you discuss?

We've always done this with our daughters' daycare providers about
every three months or so. We have one meeting with the director and
Caileigh's teachers; another with the director and Paige's teachers.
We talk about how the child is doing in general, what kind of
activities she enjoys/is particularly good at and what kinds she may not
be, particular "goals" we may have that we can make sure we're
being consistent on (e.g., what is the speech therapist working on with
Caileigh and how can they reinforce that? How can we interest Paige in
potty training?), things that we've liked about the center/that
daughter's class, things we're not crazy about, etc.....

I really think it helps. We get to hear more about their days than we
can get from a note, or a quicky discussion when you drop them off.
They know how concerned we really are about the care our kids are
    receiving.

We have this at least twice a year. It's usually held on a Saturday, and
they provide babysitting in a different room. They have some sort of
developmental guide, and discuss your child's progress in each of the
areas (there are about 50 for infants, and about 30 for 2-yr-olds). They
discuss social skills and suggest areas you can help your child improve.
They also accept suggestions as well!

We do it, too. They have a checklist of things they think a child should be
doing, and then they mark WS (working on skill), MS (mastered skill) and
NR (not ready for that skill [at this age] yet). They also have an area
where they enter suggestions for things the parent(s) can do to help the
child improve in an area. At the bottom they sometimes add other comments.

We discuss what things he really enjoys and any concerns we have. I *think*
we meet twice a year.

Would someone be willing to type in a sample of one of these evaluation
checklists? Whatever is appropriate for a 21-month-old would be much
    appreciated!

    Thanks.

These evaluation checklist sounds very interesting but I have never
seen any of them. My daugther is with a daycare provider and to date
we have verbally discussed her various developmental stages. I would
much rather have my own checklist just to stay more involved. Could any
point me to where I could locate some copies. Thanks much.

Children's World is where Evan attends. You could try going to one and
asking if they would give you a copy for your child's age group or so.
