I think there was a topic in womannotes about it (ike22::womannotes-v3) in the
last couple months.

| I don't have any experience with the implants, but I DO know they were
approved by the FDA recently, and they are costly ($400 here in
Massachusetts). BUT, they last 5 years, so if you figure the cost
of birth control pills over 5 years, the implants are probably
actually cheaper. It's just that you have to pay the money all at
once. They also aren't without side effects, but I think the side
effects are mild - in-between period spotting is the only one that
comes to mind.

| I was checking into the Norplant but due to a history of blood
clots my doctor would not proceed with the implant.
Some of the other things I remember are that the patient can not
weigh more than 150 lbs, it can cause spotting itermittently or
constantly or you may not have a period at all.
There were several other side effects that I can not really
remember right now as I lost interest after hearing about the
possibility of causing blood clots.

| Those sound like the same potential side effects as for a certain
kind of birth control pill?

Bonnie,
I said the same thing to my doctor and she agreed. I guess the
best thing about the Norplant is you don't have to remember to take a
pill everyday.

| I also forgot to tell you. I am on John Hancock Insurance and when
we first discussed using this method (I was going to use it for relief
of endimetriosis SP??) I called them and they will NOT cover the
procedure because it is still an experimental procedure PLUS they do
not cover birth control, I spent a very long time trying to explain it
was not being used for birth control but they stood firm about not
paying any amount for it.

| They'd better update their information -- Norplant went off the
"experimental" list some time last year.

| The Digital Medical Plan (aka "John Hancock"), as far as I know,
doesn't cover contraceptive medication or devices for any purpose, though
the "Your Benefits Book" is mute on the subject. Some HMOs, for
example, HealthSource New Hampshire, do cover contraception.

| The only thing the gal would say when I talked to her was we don't
cover birth control, HOWEVER, we will cover tubal ligation, D&C and
Hysterectomy. When I told her that wasn't an option for me, since I'm
only 30 and would like to have more children, she said, sorry but
that's all we will do for you, but your doctor could write a letter and
explain why you need this and we will review it.
So it sounded to me that even though they have policies in place,
they will make exceptions.

960.10 | More info in woman notesfile | TOOK::GEISER | | Wed Jun 19 1991 12:50 | 8 |
| I have just entered information about the NORPLANT SYSTEM that was
given to me by my gyn in the women notes file, note 871.34 and 871.35.
Moderators, these notes are lengthy and I wasn't sure if this was a
waste of space or not. If you feel the information is worth
duplicating, please feel free to copy the notes here as well.
