952.0. "Bottomless pit during pregnancy" by SWAM2::DERY_CH () Fri Jun 07 1991 20:15

I'm hoping to get some reassurance that I'm not the only woman in
history that has become "the bottomless pit" while pregnant!

I'm 23 weeks pregnant and had a tough time with all day sickness
at the beginning. Well, the good news is that the sickness is
behind me. The bad news is that I'm *constantly* hungry! It's
gotten to the point where I can easily eat a ton of fruit, eat
lunch at 11:00, and I'm starving again by noon!! I'm drinking
alot of water, staying away from sweets as much as I can :^} and
    I walk for an hour a nite, 3 or 4 nites a week. I don't want to
not eat, but I don't want to overdo it, either! My weight gain
has been average (9 lbs so far).

Could this be a growth spurth that the baby is going through, or
am I making up for lost time in the eating department?? I have
my monthly checkup next week and I plan to ask my midwife what
could have turned me into a human garbage disposal all of a
    sudden.

I look forward to hearing from others who may have experienced
    this!

You're not the only woman in history - I ate enormous amounts when I was
pregnant, and I drank even more! At 23 weeks, I think your baby is still
very tiny (a couple of ounces?), but the support system needs a lot of,
um, input. I used to be somewhat embarrassed to visit friends when I
was pregnant, because I would have to eat just about every hour, or else
be unable to think of anything besides how starving I was. And I
almost constantly had a glass of juice, water or 7-up in my hand.
As long as you're staying away from junk foods, eat as much as your
body says it wants - that's my belief.

I ate like a PIG when I was pregnant, I'll admit it! But it was mostly
healthy foods. I gained a total of 35 lbs during the pregnancy.
I ate alot of ice cream, like every day. I had a feddish for potato
sticks. I figured if I wanted to eat alot I might as well do it then
while I was gaining weight anyway, who would notice. I guess the weight
I gained was a little high for me but it wasn't a dangerous amount.
I had a healthy 8 lb girl as a result!!

    Lot's of luck to you!

I found that eating more complex carbohydrates -- things like
whole grain, bread, baked potatoes, vegetables -- filled me up
more than fruit or dairy products. Fruit is mostly water, fiber,
and natural sugar, and I found that the natural sugars didn't last
any longer than the artificial ones. Brown rice pilaf, corn on
the cob, and whole wheat toast with no-oil peanut butter were my
    staples. . .

I seem to go through phases and I contribute it to growth spurts.
For about a week at a time, I can eat lots and then it seems to taper
down again. I have never gotten to the point that I absolutely gorge
myself but that is probably because I feel physically uncomfortable
(ready to explode) when my belly is real full. I also tend towards
heartburn which certainly cuts down on the old appetite.

For me small frequent feedings are the key.

re .0:

Well, you've touched on my personally favorite past time: EATING!

I'm 35 weeks pregnant, and like you experienced lots of nausea in my first
trimester.

Since that horror is in the past, I've been rather indulgent myself. I tend
to follow my body's rhythms when it comes to eating while pregnant -I'm
pretty convinced it's tied in with the baby's (or my own) body's needs. I
eat lots of fruit, drink lots of juice (I'll often dilute it with water or
club soda), and hey, if I want a chocolate bar *once in a while*, what the
heck! As long as I know I'm not gorging myself on junk food and empty
calories, I don't worry.

I've put on a, ahem, healthy amount of weight since I became pregnant (40
lbs by my calculations, 25 by my dr's - but then she started counting later
than I did...). But I'm not going to worry about it - as long as I don't
give birth to Jackie Gleason's reincarnation!

My appetite waxes and wanes from week to week also. Sometimes I can eat a
full meal and then have seconds plus a snack before bed, other times I eat
like a bird and feel like I'll explode if I have another morsel. Heartburn
is the only thing I worry about - I get it often...

You exercise, which is great (I don't), and you'll probably be able to lose
the weight you gain now easier than if you didn't exercise (assuming you
continue after baby arrives). I'll have to start from square one and motivate
my near-rotund self alot more to shed my extra flub.

Good luck,

Caryn

its been so long since I was pregnant that I can't remember if I ate a
lot. However, when my girlfriend was pregnant recently, we used to tell
her older two kids to keep moving when she was hungrey so she didn't
mistake them for food!!!! I mean this girl ate everything in site!!!
She had a perfectly healthy, beautiful boy and has lost most of the
weight she had gained. Just don't make yourself sick. Listen to your
    body; it won't misguide you.
