913.2 | 20/20 recap | POWDML::LALIBERTE | | Tue May 21 1991 15:40 | 14 |
| 3 main sections were :
(1) parental interaction w/ child right from birth...showing how the
parents engaging and bonding with the child affects them...showed some
infants from an orphanage who failed to thrive due to lack of sufficient
human contact
(2) sleep patterns - using the Ferber method to modify child's
sleep behavior...video section of parents utilizing the Ferber
method, i.e. teaching him to self-soothe
(3) the terrible twos - THIS CHILD LOOKED AND ACTED EXACTLY LIKE
MINE - the never ending battle between his new independence and
your (as a parent) need for control....how many limits to set, etc...
complete with video tapes section of child throwing tantrum in
grocery store.

| I would love to see this. If anyone in PKO taped it, could I possibly
borrow it?
I never even saw the advertisment for this special.
BTW, what were some of the suggestions to a parent of a two/three year
old?
Thanks.

| The program is available from 20/20 for a cost ($19.95, I believe).
I think that is a bit steep but if you can't find anyone who
did tape it, you might want to contact 20/20.
I think the segment on sleep problems using the Ferber technique,
offers a very convincing argument for consistency handling poor
sleep habits early in a childs life. I remember cringing the
first time I saw this segment many years ago because I had
recently gone through sleepless nights because of a daughter who
couldn't comfort herself back to sleep. Now, several years later,
I still cringed watching that segment. I really felt for the parents
(and child) even though I currently experience a full-nights sleep
on a regular basis. Sleep deprivation is a very serious problem.

913.5 | terrible twos | POWDML::LALIBERTE | | Wed May 22 1991 10:04 | 12 |
| regarding the 2-3 year old behavior...they had the parents speak
with brazelton who viewed the tape footage...he maintains that limit
setting is important but you really have to go with the flow and
pick up cues from the kid...he stressed the importance of understanding
that the kid is experimenting at all times and that the pattern
is normal developmental growth. the mother wanted to maintain
consistency and he sort of let her off the hook by saying that was
very difficult to achieve at this age. i think the underlying message
was to aim for consistency but expect that you can't achieve it.
i noticed that brazelton has that very calming effect on people...sort
of like walter cronkite...but of course their kids are all grown !

| ..And what about the supermarket temper tantrum mentionned?
My kids are 7, 3 and 1. I go shopping with them every week (without my
wife), and I have always sworn that the day one threw a tantrum I would
gather them up and walk out the door, leaving the cart where it was.
Whoever was responsible would not go shopping for the next couple of
times, no matter what arrangements had to be made. I've never come
close to having to do that, and these are some very strong-willed kids
who at that 2-3 age can be quite rough.

913.8 | I have a copy - albeit not a great one | SOLVIT::DUHAIME | | Wed May 22 1991 13:18 | 16 |
| Denise,
My husband taped the sleep segment and the tantrum segment of the
20/20 program. It's not a great copy but once we finish viewing it
I can let you borrow it.
I must say that watching the sleep segment last night was very
disturbing but it reconfirmed that the process we took with our
daughter about letting her get herself to sleep since she was
6 months old was correct. We have not had any sleepless nights
since then except due to colds or booster shots.
I plan to watch the tantrum segment tonight and will add my
opinion/reaction to it tomorrow.

913.9 | Program not mentioned in TV listings... | ULTRA::DONAHUE | | Wed May 22 1991 13:19 | 14 |
|
The main reason most of us missed this show, was the fact that it
wasn't listed in the various TV sections. For some reason what ever
show was planned for that time slot, wasn't shown.
My husband had been watching sports and flipped this program on in
mid-stream. I didn't know WHAT was going on when I first saw this
little tyke SCREAMING in the crib. It was horrible, as our Daniel has
never done that. He lies down, fusses for a few minutes then falls
asleep. Anyway, back to the show.... I was amazed at how the Ferber
method helped this couple and the child responded to the consistency.
You realize, that if everyone who wants a copy of this program chipped
in, they could get a copy from 20/20 for only pennies a pop?

| I just sent a full copy of the program to the basenoter for her to view
and copy. If anyone wants to continue that process of copying, be my
guest. I just eventually want it back.
