831.0. "FOSTERCHILD TO FOSTERPARENT" by BTOVT::COLEMAN_D (Day By Day) Fri Apr 12 1991 19:58

My husband and I have been talking about becoming
foster parents. I grew up in foster homes, some were
good, some bad. I have always wanted to become a
foster parent because I feel that I can relate to
a foster child and I love to watch children learn/
grow. I just never got involved with fosterparenting
because I just barely have enough time to give to my
own 2 children. I am thinking that I may be one of
those people that will be asked to leave the company
soon and I don't really feel motivated to go out for
a new job when I really want to stay home but this
family needs a second income. Are there any foster
parents in this file who can give me some details
about how you got started, what are qualifications,
what are some of your experiences with foster children
that you've had. I'm kind of sorry that I might be
leaving this company(Digital has been good to me)but,
I'm excited about becoming a foster parent since this
has been a goal for me. Please respond ASAP either
through this conference or send me mail. Thank you,
    							  Diana

831.1NOT a second income....BRAT::DISMUKEMon Apr 15 1991 10:1124
Well, one thing is for sure -- don't consider foster care as your
second income. In the state of New Hampshire the "pay" for foster care
works out to be $6.58/day per child. I believe Massachusetts is about
    twice that.

My husband and I went thru the suggested classes and even had a child
for 4 months. Since we are working on two different shifts, we find it
is difficult. We haven't had a child since February. I firmly believe
that having at least one at home parent is more an ideal situation.
Depending on the age of the child, there will be alot of running around
the FP is expected to do: doctor's, parental visits, school (in some
cases), therapists, etc. It will take alot out of you - but if you go
into it with the right frame of mind - it will be well worth it. We
may continue with the FP association - but probably not while I am
    working.

If you want to talk off line, give me a call. I do however, suggest
you contact your local state office for children. Find out what they
have to say - you can even have a licensing worker come to your house
to discuss this whole thing. Be sure you go into it with both eyes
wide open. It will be a great experience - if you're ready.
