788.0. "Move to Hood River Oregon: QUESTIONS!" by TALK::SMALLWOOD (Kim Smallwood Mfg. Appl. Eng. 266-4504) Fri Mar 22 1991 09:01

My husbands out in Hood River as I write assessing the
feasibility of purchasing a sailboard manufacturing business.
So far he's please with what he's finding, so I guess its time
I take this option seriously and consider WHAT DO I WANT?!

We have a 7 month old and a 2 1/2 yr old. We vacationed in
Hood River before kids so I am somewhat familiar with the
	area.

What's the kids life like out there? Are there good child
care centers, since I will likely try to find some parttime
job? What's the 'at-home-mom' life like (since I'm used to
a fulltime job with DEC now) - are there libraries?, culture
things to do with the kids?, informal play groups? What's
winter like with kids (we all ski at a great area within
25 minutes from our current house)? what's public schools
	like?

					Any inputs would be appreciated!

Hood River is about 100 miles from Portland. The area is
depressed. If the business is well thought and the market is
there for it; Hood River is great place away from the big city of
Portland.

The sceniero that I draw is we live in Colorado Springs. It was a
great area to live when the economy is great but when it gets
tough, there's no jobs at all. When we lived in California, we
both had to work but we could live on one salary and bank the
other's salary. Now my job went away and we're looking to have to
dig into our safety money to move and find a job; either one of
us.

I know that business is not the greatest in the NE but if you
both have jobs, stay there. But then if you're young (like
between 25 to 35) go for it as you will never realize the
american dream if you stay put.

God's blessings be with you.

788.2Good if you're a wind-surferMINAR::BISHOPFri Mar 22 1991 14:115
My brother lives in Hood River, and likes it. But then, he's a
wind-surfer and Hood River is the best place in the U.S. to go
    wind-surfing, he says.
