| sounds like a flea allergy. I believe that it can be controlled using
a cortisone ointment, but see your doctor about it first. The only
thhing besides whatever treatment thhey can give him, might be to check
the canine notesfile for flea control in the house.

753.2 | Beats spraying chemicals all over the house ... | SITBUL::FYFE | | Thu Mar 07 1991 14:46 | 11 |

At night put out a dish of water with a small film of dish soap or
cooking oil. Put a lamp light right over it. Make sure the sides of the
dish are shallow.
The fleas, attracted by the light, will move towards the dish and
'jump in'. By morning you will see hundreds of fleas in the soup.
Do this for a week and you should have no move fleas.

re:2
I'll vouch for that!! Someone told me to do that and I laughed.
I get bad headaches from the smell of chemical flea controllers.
Where I live it is very sandy all around my house. I also have cats.
I started doing that with the dishsoap, and it really worked!
I also read that if you keep the grass around the house cut all the
time it will help keep the fleas down. Don't really know if that
works because what little grass we have the horse eats.
Good luck to you and your family!

There is lots of information in CANINE about controlling fleas, you
might want to look there. As far as the soapywater/dish trick, yes it
does work, I've tried it. One word of caution though, make sure that
other household pets cannot drink the mixture, besides being upset by
the soap, the animals (or small children for that matter) could ingest
some of the fleas potentially carrying eggs and that equals worms in
the animals (which of course means a trip to the vets).
I have also heard (although never tried) that putting salt on the
rugs and around the animal bedding kills the fleas. You have to apply
it at night and then vacumn in the morning.

753.5 | Skin-so-soft, maybe? | FSTTOO::STEVENS | Roberts' mom | Wed Mar 13 1991 16:26 | 13 |
| Thanks for the replies! I will try the dishsoap bowl method for inside
the house when we move down. There is so much sand in Florida, the
yards are almost all sand and Robert love to play outside. I wonder if
he will build up a resistance to the bites over time? Maybe he is getting a
reaction from the chemicals used in my parents home! I will be seeing
a doctor immediately, because in two days he will be already covered with
bites.
Anyone know if Avons Skin-so-soft repels fleas?
thanks,
Mac

753.6 | Are you sure it's fleas? | NRADM::TRIPPL | | Wed Mar 20 1991 14:29 | 22 |
| Funny you should ask..........!!!
My inlaws, and her mother (80something years old) just got back from
Jacksonville FL last night, after spending two weeks. My husband's
brother is in the Navy and is on a scheduled tour to Diego Garcia, in
the Middle East. As a fortunate occurance with the peace happening
they granted him a 30 day leave to go home. (thank heavens for MAC
Flights!) My husband's brother, wife and two children; 5 & 3 are living
not far from the coast in a new development of duplexes. Not one of them
have ever mentioned a problem like you described. We visited with them
5 years ago, when they had a place right on the beach, and never had such
a problem.
What is it that makes it you so sure it's Fleas??? I would almost
wonder if it wasn't an allergic reaction to something, probably not
alive!
Is your relative also in the Military? That whole city seems to be one
big Navy base!
Good Luck!

753.7 | I just ASSUMED fleas... | FSTTOO::STEVENS | Roberts' mom | Wed Apr 03 1991 11:32 | 15 |
| I really don't know what it is. I just assumed fleas. My parents have
animals and a great back year that they spray for fleas and bugs. I
wonder if he is allergic to the spray?
My family was military, but retired now. That would make a great notes
file MILITARY BRATS.
Well I guess I will let the Doctors decide what is wrong with Robert.
I am sure it will happen again, it does every time, but we only visit
for two weeks at a time so I am a bit more worried because we are going
to be there a year.
thanks,
Mac
