722.0. "Children's Entertainment" by DATABS::TAYLOR () Thu Feb 21 1991 17:05

    Does anyone know where I can get some information on children's
    entertainment? I'm specifically looking for a clown or puppet show
    for a children's party or any other clever idea. Ages 3-10.

    PS. If you have any pricing info that would be helpful too.

    Hi -

    I am not sure where you are located, but here are some ideas that came
    to mind - most McDonalds restaurants do birthday parties and a lot of
    them have playgrounds, too. Or go to the local bowling alley - my
    sister did this for her kids and they loved it. They call it bumper
    bowling and apparently long inflated bumpers are placed in the gutters
    (the length of the alley) and the kids can't help but get the ball in
    the neighborhood of the pins.

    Most towns have kid clowns listed in the phone book but go on some
    recommendations, because some of them are really scary for the little
    ones. And they will come to your house.

    Steer away from the pony ride rountine, mainly because people are so
    sue-happy anymore. It would be a liability nightmare.

    Or, how about going to a local working farm park. We have several here
    in the San Francisco area and they are always filled with animals,
    tractors, you name it.

    What appeals to me about the parties away from home is that you don't
    have the clean up!

    Good luck!

722.2Chuck E Cheese!BCSE::WEIERPatty, DTN 381-0877Sun Feb 24 1991 12:288
    You might want to check out someplace like Chuck E. Cheese's. They do
    birthday parties, and they have a huge-'puppets' puppet theater and
    arcade type stuff. The kids absolutely **LOVE** it there. Rides are
    $.25, and there's a few that can take 2 kids.

    Their slogan is "Where a KID can be a KID!", and it's quite true!!
    Plus they serve beer and wine, so you can have a drink if you like!

    I figured I'd put this here!

    Does anybody have a date for Sesame Street show at the Lowell Memorial
    Auditorium? I know Demoulas Markets has discount tickets for this event
    but I don't know the dates.

722.4EXCELLENT SHOW THIS YEAR!GENRAL::MARZULLATue Feb 26 1991 16:529
    The Sesame Street show just came through Colorado Springs. We have
    attended the shows when them come to town for the last five years.
    This year's show was excellent! It featured the ABC's and the kids
    really enjoyed it. The show had a new character, Tee-Hee, and the
    character was done well and very entertaining.

    I really recommend it for everyone when they come to your area!

    RE: .5 Corporate policy frowns on negative input regarding places of
    business in the NOTES files.

    You may praise them all you want, just don't bad mouth them :-)

    In my humble opinion, if they can gain business from references found
    here, then they should provide top notch quality service/product.

    Just my 2 cents

722.7oops, not quite the point I wanted to makeCSSE32::RANDALLwaiting for springThu Mar 07 1991 16:1416
    I'm sorry, I didn't mean to disparage Chuck E. Cheese.  I see
    that's what it sounds like, but that wasn't what I was thinking
    when I wrote it. (Don't you just hate the way language slides
    around?)

    I found them exactly as advertised -- the whole place is aimed at
    the kids, not at the adults. The kids had an absolutely
    wonderful time, the games are exactly what I would have wanted
    myself when I was 7, and the pizza was aimed at the kids, not at
    the adults. Which, I repeat, is exactly what they advertise, and
    what they deliver very well. And I suppose it's good to have
    places that cater strictly to the kids' tastes.

    I just found it extremely unpleasant for myself.

722.9They get my vote!BCSE::WEIERPatty, DTN 381-0877Thu Mar 07 1991 21:436
    Gee .... a place that servers beer and wine, gives 'free' tokens
    depending on the amount of purchase, and has a safe environment set up
    for your children's enjoyment doesn't sound to me like they're JUST
    catering to the kids .... but then I *REALLY* love going to Chuck E.
    Cheese, so I may be biased (what's wrong with the pizza?!)

722.10nothing *wrong* with it, I just don't like itCSSE32::RANDALLwaiting for springFri Mar 08 1991 10:1816
    There's nothing *wrong* with the pizza. I just don't like it --
    it's extremely bland, with a soft doughy crust. I like spicy
    pizza with a chewy crust. It was so noisy I couldn't talk to my
    other daughter who was sitting beside me, and every time I got up,
    somebody's four-year-old stampeded across my toes. As you would
    expect in a place crawling with kids.

    I'll repeat yet again, there isn't a thing wrong with it. It's
    just not what I like!

    Though I must say that taking Steven there has given me a lot more
    sympathy for how he must feel when we take him to a place that's
    set up just for adults. From now on we'll stick mostly to places
    that all of us can enjoy.

    No, the nearest is the Saugus area, or the Manchester NH area. There
    is a similar place in Nashua - it is billed as FUNWORLD - packed with
    video games, etc. but they also do birthday parties. Nashua isn't
    really close to the GMA, but you may find something similar in
    Framingham or Marlboro. I think most of the towns around there do not
    have "video houses" or "playtime theaters".
