Plans are being made in the hope that I could be traveling to Hanover, NH from Burlington,VT., BTO. I am a single (and deaf) parent and have sole custody of 2 girls living with me. I get reimbursement check from J Hancock every month for after-school day care expense when I send in my receipts and the claims form. My question is; Do I charge overnight babysitting as part of the travel expense along with motel, meal and gas?... Or do I include overnight baby- sitting expense along with the after-school program to J. Hancock Dependent Child Care?... My guess is that I include babysitting in the travel expense as well. John Huntington,VT.

I would suggest you call John Hancock and ask. I think the number is 800-DEC-2060. My understanding is that the overnight sitting expenses would likely not be covered. Gas, meals and lodging are definitely not covered. You can get a bit more about DCRA from VTX ORANGEBOOK. Steve

Babysitting expenses are not reimbursable travel expenses. It's in the orange book (Personnel Policies and Procedures). /m.

Yes, I found it... in the Orangebook under Business Travel section 5.11 topic #7, Miscellaneous. Overnight babysitting expense is not included in the travel expense. Which leaves me with only one option,... I'll have to contact J.Hancock. Thanks, John

Actually, in this case, the babysitting might indeed be included. Check with Personnel to be sure, but the qualifications for DCRA are the same as for the Federal tax credit. (In fact, they refer you to the tax code.) The key here is that the expense is *necessary for you to work*. If this travel is necessary for your job and the only way you can do it causes you to incur expense in order to care for your dependent children, it probably *is* covered. (I just did some pretty thorough research into this section cause we're in a weird situation ourselves. The code is broader than you might think. Depdendent care to allow you to *Look for work* is covered for example.) Babysitting to allow you to go on a pleasure trip is NOT covered. Tracey |
