Has anyone else experienced bad breath in their children? Friday night we were up with Jason most of the night with coughing fits and noticed at that time that his breath was kinda sour-smelling. He seemed much better (both breath odor and coughing) Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. However, this morning, he woke up (early) with incredibly bad breath again. Today, his breath smells like...well, smells like a dirty diaper. For what its worth, he just cut two teeth last week in addition to having this bear of a cold and is working on the same two (molar and last of the 4 fronts on the bottom) on the opposite side now. He is also refusing to brush his teeth (something he usually *loves* to do) and being a general pain about eating (wanting something and then saying "NO" emphatically as soon as it gets to his lips). Is the bad breath caused by his cold? or by teething? or both? My husband was wondering if his digestive system is backed up... but I doubt that since he has been having regular movements. Luckily, he has a checkup at the pedi tomorrow...but until then, I'd like to hear that somebody else has experienced this?!? Thanks, Carol

Eric (now 2.5) will have bad breath when he has a serious cold. Minor cold won't give him the bad breath. It always goes away when the cold is over. He also never gets bad breath with teething. Wendy

Remember that nobody's mouth is a bed of roses first thing in the morning...while you're sleeping, saliva doesn't circulate as freely and thus whatever is in your mouth is "biodegrading," so to speak. Post-nasal drip can contribute to really disgusting morning mouth. All tht gunk draining down your throat all night long...makes me queasy just thinking about it! :-) I always have terrible morning mouth when I have a cold, or when I'm coming down with one. Mike says he can always tell when I'm getting strep throat because he can barely be in the same room with me till I've brushed my teeth. Probably Jason doesn't want to brush his teeth right now because his mouth hurts. Maybe a new brush, different toothpaste? If all else fails, put some toothpaste and rub it over his teeth, then offer him a drink of water and show him how to spit (if he doesn't already know how). Good luck, they're so cute, but they can be sooooo gross!

Bad breath can also be a sign of sickness! Nathan had smelled bad, and lo and behold, on a suprise trip to the doctor, he turns up with a bad ear infection. It is fairly universal, but refers more to a different badness as opposed to your usual morning miserable breath...is your child's breath or smell different recently than before? Adrienne |
