592.0. "Napping on the floor at daycare?" by NOVA::WASSERMAN (Deb Wasserman, DTN 264-1863) Thu Jan 03 1991 13:22

Marc (14 months) currently does all of his napping/sleeping in his
crib. I've noticed that he tends to roll around a lot, often ending up
sleeping at the other end of the crib, sideways, squeezed in the
corner, etc. (and to think when he was born I wondered what the use of
bumpers were since he stayed in the exact same place I laid him down
    :-)))

Anyway, he goes to family daycare and also sleeps in a crib there.
I've been wondering how he will be able to nap on the floor if/when we
decide to move him to a daycare center. I can't imagine him sleeping
on a mat on the floor -- he'll just stand up and walk away! How do
they get the toddlers to sleep on the floor? What are people's
    experiences with this?

Well, mine (21 months) takes naps on the floor quite often during
the day. Some days are worse than others - she flops around a bit,
but usually its not a problem.

I don't know how they do it but they do it. I can walk into the
daycare center during naptime and there are over 100 kids sleeping on
mats including my daughter Kyla who I can hardly keep in her crib at
home. I think they feel like a big kid when they get to sleep on the
mats like most of the other kids, kind of like follow the leader.

592.4Cribs all aroundELMAGO::PHUNTLEYFri Jan 04 1991 14:0818
In my son's (he is 18 months old) there are cribs for each child
through age 2. I think this also helps Joshua know that even at
day care he has his "own" space. All of the regulars have their
same crib every day and the sheets are changed daily, so it helped
me feel more comfortable about cleanliness, germs, etc. I like
knowing that Josh isn't sleeping where someone else has been laying
and it just is warmer up off of the floor. That's how it works
    at my son's daycare.

Joshua is a real wiggler, too. In fact while on vacation him and
I shared a bed, daddy in the other. Well, even though I put Josh
next to the wall and me on the outside Josh managed to fall off
the end of the bed, THROUGH THE COVERS!!!!! This past weekend we
put a twin bed in his room but I think it will be a while before
he uses it---don't think I am ready to keep putting him back to
    bed, yet!;-)

592.5Don't worry...CARTUN::MANDALINCIFri Jan 04 1991 14:5215
I agree with .3 - Berk was an especially terrible wiggler when he was
about 18 months. He started daycare at 27 months and I never thought he
would stay on the mats. He was already switched to a bed then (a double
with plenty of room to wiggle and not fall off). Well, he had no
problems and the teachers never mentioned him being all over the floor
(but the did comment on his snoring!!). I think he followed the crowd.

I wouldn't worry because that's why the mats are on the floor. Worst
possible case, he'll roll into some other kid. If it's bad they might put
him closer to a wall or surround him by pillows as well.

Berk outgrew the horribly wiggly stage about then as well but he still
sleeps with his head on Dad and feet on Mom (forming an "H") when he
    sleeps with us if sick!!!

Kat never had any problem napping at school, which is amazing
since when we've had to share a floor with her at night when we
visit the in-laws, she sometimes rolls over the top of the person
next to her and keeps rolling and squirming until something too
big to roll over stops her. And once at Girl Scout camp, she
rolled clear out of the platform tent . . .

We wound up giving her our old queen-size bed, and now she doesn't
fall out of bed any more. . .
