I just had a conversation with Eric's (now 28 month) daycare
teacher this morning. She told me that she thinks Eric
has a balance problem. Base on her observation, Eric
has a tendency to lean his head toward his right shoulder.
She said there could be a problem with his middle or inner
ear. I did notice the same behavior, but I always think
that's just a habbit. I also don't think he is doing
it as frequent as the teacher described. I called the
pedi. right after the conversation and will bring Eric
for a checkup this Friday.
I just want to know more about the balance problem. If
anyone's toddler has the problem, when and how did
you find out the problem and what the treatments
are? Is there a long-term effect if it is untreated
or treated too late?
I felt pretty guilty, because I didn't pick up the problem.
However, Eric is doing well and advanced in all areas. It
gives me no reasons to think there could be a problem.
Thanks, Wendy

Wendy,
My son was 10 months old and everytime he would try to sit up by
himself, he would fall over. Due to the fact that he has Down Syndrome,
we kind of ignored the problem as we thought it was due to his low muscle
tone.
He was having an awful time with ear infections so they put tubes in
his ears, within a week of his surgery he was sitting up by himself
with no problem. The doctors and therapists agree that his problem
was actually fluid and not low muscle tone.
I could have kicked myself for not realizing it sooner, but than I
am a first time mom and not a medical professional.
I guess what I'm trying to say is don't beat yourself up for not
noticing some things, the best thing is to let the doctor check it out
and go from there. If there is fluid and they want to put tubes in,
it is a really easy surgery. I worried myself sick over the surgery
even though everyone told me is was a piece of cake. They were all
right, the entire procedure only took 10 minutes and within 3 hours
after arriving at the hospital we were home and Shayne slept most of
the day.
Good luck and I hope everything works out......

| 541.2 | Neurological problem? | ISLNDS::AMANN | Wed Dec 05 1990 16:34 | 19 | |
Wendy,
My son was 6 years old before we recognized his balance problem.
Even his pediatrician never noticed it.
We took our son to Children's Hospital for an evaluation because
he was having academic problems. The full day evaluation showed
Chris had learning disabilities and other neurological problems,
including balance. To this day (he's now 12) he can not ride
a bike.
Anyway, there's certainly nothing to feel guilty about. It's good
you have a day care person who tries to be observant. I hope it's
just some transient inner ear problem that can be fixed quickly
-
or something else that simply disappears on its own.

Good news! I have Eric checked by his pedi. last Friday.
He did few simple tests and said Eric is fine. He has
no balance problem. The leaning toward one side may just
a temporary habbit. What a relief! Thanks for all
the replies!
