519.0. "Pregnancy and Type 1 Diabetes" by AGNT99::GEARY () Wed Nov 21 1990 09:30

    Hi,

I am looking for personal experiences from anyone who has type 1
diabetes and is going through or has been pregnant. I haven't
been very successful in finding any good reading material on the
    subject yet and welcome suggestions.

I have spoken to my doctor in the past and know that being in
good control at the onset is very important but am wondering how
much different is it trying to stabilize your sugars once
    pregnant.

I have a million questions and would love to talk to anyone off-
line if they wouldn't mind sharing. Of course anything said here
    is great also.

Since this looks like it's been in for a while with no replies, let me
offer a couple suggestions. First I'm not clear on where you are
geographically, but there is the Joselin Diabetes Clinic in Boston,
it's THE place for Diabetes questions and answers, also you might ask
the doctor you see for your diabetes, or in Central Mass call the
Memorial Hospital, they have a very respected Neonatal ICU, as well as
a long list of respected OB/GYN's on staff who would be willing to
answere your questions. There is also the Umass Medical Center in
Worcester, a teaching hospital, which has a diabetes clinic.

If you're not local to this area, contact whatever university teaching
hospital you have in your area, or the National Diabetes Foundation.

Since I've heard diabetes referred to in many ways, can you define what
Type 1 means? I'm presuming this is NOT gestational.

    Lyn,
Type I diabetes is insulin dependent, and not gestational. Type I
is also known as Juvenile Diabetes.
To the basenoter, since my son is the one with diabetes, I really
can't give you much information, but when you talked about the ability
to stabilize the blood sugar while pregnant, I would think that could
be rather difficult but not impossible since your body will be going
through some dramatic changes. I know with Shayne we have a very
difficult time stabilizing him lately, as he is going through teething,
which isn't even up there with pregnancy.
I would suggest you contact the local Diabetes Association and get
some information from them, or maybe even look into one of the local
support groups, I am sure there will be women there who can relate
    their experiences.

    Good luck,
    Malinda
