| I was told by my OB to take Mylanta. I don't know the difference, but
for me the TUMS weren't cutting it either!

516.2 | Liquids work faster | ICS::NELSONK | | Wed Nov 21 1990 08:53 | 4 |

Yes, I think the liquids work faster, although rather sloppy to
cart back and forth to work. My husband said last night that he
thought I was allowed to take Mylanta when I was pregnant with James.

516.3 | P-B maybe not the best.... | MR4DEC::KOZAK | | Wed Nov 21 1990 08:54 | 8 |
| Re: Pepto-Bismol
We were told by our Doctor that Pepto-Bismol was not OK during
pregnancy. The reason? It contains bismuth, which she said was not
good. I haven't the foggiest idea why bismuth is not safe, but we (my
wife) has decided no P-B.

| My wife's Doctors told her to take preparations with only Aluminum Hydroxide
(Aludrox or Amphogel depending on where you live) in them, and avoid those
with Magnesium and especially those with Simethicone (which seems kind of
strange considering one of the things recommended for baby gas is Ovol drops
which is Simethicone!)
So ... see what your Dr recommends

516.6 | read labels, some brands have more than one formulation | TLE::RANDALL | self-defined person | Wed Nov 21 1990 09:54 | 12 |
| Check with your doctor -- .4 agrees with what I was told, but
they're doing a lot of research in the area of fetal development
and sometimes they discover something they thought was safe can
cause problems. I know anything with magnesium is out, I think
because the magnesium accumulates in the baby's developing brain,
but I'm not positive on the why.
I used Titrilac, which is a calcium carbonate antacid --
basically, chalk in a base to make it palatable. They also have a
magnesium-based formula, so be sure to read the labels.

Hurt The Baby?" - covers over the counter and prescription drug safety
during pregnancy and lactation.

516.9 | No pepto! | CRONIC::ORTH | | Tue Nov 27 1990 17:03 | 7 |
| Pepto contains salicylates, the basic ingredient in aspirin. That is
why it is considered undesirable. Particularly in the last trimester,
women should strongly avoid anything with salicylates, as it can bring
on labor.

516.10 | Watch the sodium content | NRADM::TRIPPL | | Mon Dec 10 1990 14:37 | 19 |
| I was told that Mylanta is the lowest in sodium, and we don't need to
encourage the swollen ankles! Back when I was having gall bladder
attacks I mentioned to my interist I was "eating" rolaids by the roll,
he almost had a fit and explained that anything you chew and swallow
won't help and insisted I do only liquid, "to coat on the way down".
During my pregnancies my OB gave his blessing to Mylata of course, but
also to Tempo, the chewie antacid that reminds me of Mint Jewlip(sp?)
candy, and suggested Emtrol for nausea. Emetrol is give to kids for
control of nausea, it contains mostly sugar like simple syrup and a
mild citrus flavor. It's sold in the antacid section of the
drugstores. I always kept the antacid bottle on the door of the
fridge, it seemed to make it more palatable. That stuff is just
*awful* tasting!
Good luck
