440.0. "How to cut hair?" by MORO::NEWELL_JO (Jodi Newell - Irvine, Calif.) Tue Oct 23 1990 00:46

I love to cut hair. I cut my kids hair, my husbands hair, the
neighbors hair and anyone else who asks. I'm considering getting
another dog to to satisfy my obsession. %^)

Problem is...I've never had any formal (or informal, for that
matter) training in the art of haircuts.

I've searched the bookstores for books on the subject. I've
asked my hairdresser if she could recommend books, she said
she got all of hers through beauty college and that was many
    years ago.

I don't want to check a book out of the library, if indeed
they exist there, because I want a handy reference guide
    around all the time.

Can anyone recommend good haircutting books or videos? I'm
mostly interested in very basic cuts, especially for children.

There's an ad in Working Mother magazine which advertises a
book/video set called "How to Simply Cut Children's Hair".
I tried calling the 800# (800-833-8778) but the number is no
good in my calling area. The ad doesn't state a price.
Has anyone ever heard of this book/video offer? Would someone
outside of California try calling the 800# for me and post
    the details? Thanks in advanced.

    Eagerly awaiting your response...

Maybe you should try looking into a hairdressing supply store. I know
here in Massachusetts we have a few of them.

    Good Luck!!

    Jody,

There was a book out about 15 years ago called "How to cut your own or
anybody else's hair" or something like that, and then a sequel called
"How to Cut Children's Hair" or something like that. I took the latter
out from the library and got my basic technique from that. The copy I
had was so old it should be called "How to Cut Children's Hair So They
Look Like They Are Leftover From the Seventies", but the general ideas
    were fine!

There may be updated versions of these in bookstores.

I wish the beauty schools had weekend workshops for amateurs - like one
haircut on one Saturday morning. But that isn't the market they're in!

How do you keep kids still? I use videotapes/cartoons and gummi bears.

Some beauty schools do have weekend workshops for amateurs. Not a
lot of them, not often, but if you keep your eyes open you might
    find one.

Generally barbers are more cooperative about sharing their skills
than hairdressers are. The hairdressing market is oversaturated
in most areas, while barbers view themselves as a dying breed. So
you might have better luck with someone who bills him/herself as a
    barber.

Well, the number worked for me, here on the east coast!!

Here's the local number to call: 916-544-7981

The book is 8.95, and the video is 29.95. The woman who answered
the phone was very helpful, and is sending me a brochure about the
   book and video.

    Hi Jodi,

I'm in Massachusetts and I called the number you gave. The number
for CA is 916-544-7981. The book is $7.95, the video is $29.95,
they can be bought separately and they will happily send you a
    brochure if you call them!

They were terribly cheery for 8:30 in the morning!

    Thanks everyone, for your input.

    RE: .1 Nadine

I've tried beauty supply stores, is there a specialty
store just for hairdressers? Wouldn't I need a licence
    to shop there?

    RE: .2 JaneB

I'll see if I can find the books locally. Thanks.

How do I keep the kids still? I've been cutting their hair
for so long (since birth) that they just know that everyone
is better off being still. I have tried cutting hair in the
shower, bath, on the floor and in a chair. I like the floor
the best. The 'cutee' sits on a large towel and I spray the
hair with water. I make sure my scissors are good and sharp
and I start with the bangs. They are usually the most crit-
ical as far as appearances go, so I get them out of the way
    early on.

    RE: .3 Bonnie RS

I never thought to contact a beauty school for training. I'll
    give it a try. Thanks.

    RE: .4 Tom & .5 Dorothy

Thanks for calling and posting the details. I tried calling
California number and got a recording. I left my name, etc.
and asked for a brochure. I'm a little confused though, is
the book $8.95 (per Tom) or $7.95 (per Dorothy)?

    Thanks again everyone.

    RE: .6

No, you don't need a license to shop in a beauty supply shop. They
do supply hair salons as well as regular customers (my mom). She shops
there maybe once a month. "No license required" (ha)! Check your
yellow pages under "beauty" and it should direct you to "supply
    shops"!!

    Good Luck!!

440.8Keep brushing!LEZAH::MINERhe who laughs - lasts.Tue Oct 23 1990 16:5511

I cut my family's hair too and I keep the kids still by having them
brush their teeth while I'm doing it. I have to work kind of fast
but they love brushing their teeth and I achieve two things at once,
    neat hair and sparkling teeth.

p.s. I keep my husband still by turning on Star Trek and doing his
bangs in a hurry too! Sigh.

I've done all my boys 'cuts from the start (except for about two
supplied by a cousin), with fairly respectable results. Their hair and
taste are pretty simple, though, so I'm not sure how I'd do with other
kids. They're quiet enough that I never thought of watching Sesame
Street or the like; anyway, if the weather's nice, we do it outside.

If you find any good books, Jodi, let us know!

Well, Its probably one price or the other! :-) I thought I had
the price right, but if my glasses are dirty, I don't hear so well,
so, I could very well be wrong... :-) :-)

Well, for those of us not courageous enough to do kids hair, where is a
good place in So. NH to get a toddler's hair cut?
440.14In MerrimackCGHUB::OBRIENYabba Dabba DOOWed Jul 17 1991 13:2217
The Velvet Razor in Merrimack, DW Highway across from Midas
    424-5508 (Carol)

Kim's Kut & Kurl in Merrimack, DW Highway behind Bank of NH
424-5226. Tracy was doing my kids hair, however she left this past
    week.

Both places are very reasonable for kid's cuts/washes. I've taken
Craig and Lauren to both places and have been very satisfied.

Also, on 101A (Pennichuck Square area) there are a few, but I didn't
like the charges, haircuts were good but I think $12.00 for a trim on
a 6-year old is too high.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to try Fantastic Sam's. It
cheap ($6 for kids under 11) and convenient (right on 101A, open
until 9 every day, no appt. needed). They do a "spray cut". What's a
spray cut I asked. They don't wash the kids hair or blow-dry it.
(I guess they use a plant sprayer). Can you imagine my 21-month-old
    getting his hair blow-dryed?? Hahahahaha!

I'll let you know how it comes out!

Marc had his hair cut last nite at Fantastic Sam's, and it looks great!
He looked so cute sitting there in the chair - the smock they put on
him covered his whole body except for his little sneakers peeking out!
I wish I'd brought my camera!
