439.0. "Awake 1/2 the night with 16 month old" by ELMAGO::PHUNTLEY () Mon Oct 22 1990 14:01

    HELP!!!!!!

    Last night Joshua (16 months) woke up at 2:00am and would not go
    to sleep again. He was crying and screaming so after about 15 or
    20 minutes I went and got him out of his crib. His room was slightly
    cold, he was a little bit wet, but nothing that I could see that
    would cause the hysterics.

    I took him into our room and he calmed down but would not go down
    to sleep. After tossing and turning, rubbing his back, singing
    to him, etc. he still would not go to sleep. After about an hour
    of this I took him back to his bed after a drink of juice, which
    produced another round of hysterics.

    Well, Josh spent the rest of the night wide awake, as did my husband
    and I.

    What could have caused this? He did not have a fever, didn't act
    sick (or tired either), nothing was different about his routine,
    etc. other than he had candy at his grandparents earlier in the
    evening. Surely that little bit of sugar couldn't have caused him
    to become wired 8 hours later????

    Any ideas?

439.1Early signs of ear infection?LEZAH::MINERhe who laughs - lasts.Mon Oct 22 1990 16:158

    Maybe his ears? He could have the beginnings of an ear infection which
    wouldn't necessarily show itself by a fever, but the lying down could be
    painful for him.

    Just a thought...

   Interesting, our 19 month old daughter started this about a week
   ago or so. She'll wake up some time after midnight sort-of
   screaming (not sick or in pain or wet, but not fully awake either),
   and won't go back to sleep in her crib. I've ended up taking her
   out to the living room and we fall back to sleep on a special
   blanket on the floor. If I wake up after that I can usually put
   her back to bed without incident, otherwise we end up waking up
   around normal time on the floor. We've sort of attributed it to
   the new addition in the family (daughter #2, now 4 weeks old), but
   we could be wrong.

   we've seen sugar get her wired, but that was before bed. Once we
   got her to sleep, the sugar didn't seem to make any difference.

   Have there been any changes recently?

439.3Could it be TEETH?UCOUNT::STRASENBURGHMon Oct 22 1990 16:276
    How about some teeth coming in? My son did the same thing last month 3
    nights in a row. He had three teeth coming in all at once.

    Now he is back to normal sleeping through the night.

    Guess it could be teeth--he has 16 already but maybe more molars?

    Also, a few weeks ago I spent a week at the hospital during which
    time Josh stayed with Grandma and Grandpa. Could this be an aftermath
    reaction--afraid that "my momma" is going to go away again. He
    did visit me daily in the hospital but still his routine was changed.

    It could be his ears, too. Last winter we battled ear and sinus
    infections, but I haven't noticed any of his usual signs like a
    runny nose, pulling at his ears, etc.

    Guess I will just keep an eye on him and hope for the best. Please
    let us sleep tonight!!!!

    Thanks for all the hints!

439.5Nightmares?TPS::JOHNSONMon Oct 22 1990 16:5019
    Pam,

    Perhaps it could be a nightmare? Steven (he'll be 1 in 2 wks!)
    had a few incidents of waking in the middle of the night,
    screaming uncontrollably. Nothing we could do would calm him.
    Usually we would hug, soothe, sing, give juice and eventually
    play...( a good game of peek-a-boo usually worked for us).

    For us, we could rule out ear infections since he had been
    checked recently and none of the other signs appeared.

    We have also seen the same type of waking when we have
    gone on vacation. The first night on each trip he has
    woken and cried hysterically. This is what makes me think
    it could be a nightmare or some other frightening experience
    that is bothering him.

    Good luck!
    Linda
