391.0. "Compassionate Friends?" by DELNI::ZAPPALA () Thu Oct 04 1990 13:00

I understand that there is an organization called Compassionate Friends
that helps people deal with the death of a child. Does anyone have any
information on this organization? I have been unable to locate a phone
number or address. Are there any other organizations like this? Some
very close friends lost their son a short time ago and are looking for
    a support group.

    Thanks for your help!

    My sympathies...

Here is the address you requested. I would also check with their local
hospital. I know our's offers a group. Also check the newspaper, they
will list places and times of meetings. For a friend of ours, we
called the group and had the group call them.

I know of several groups and have attended myself after the death of my
daughter. They are a wonderful and very helpful group.
What area are they in? I know of a group in Gardner, Mass , one in
Nashua, New Hampshire , and I believe there is one in Concord, Mass
though I've never been to that one. They are all over the country.

You didn't mention how old this child was. If the child was near birth
a lot of hospitals with NICU's have Grief and Loss support groups for
parents who have had late miscarriages, and near birth losses. We
particpated in the one at Memorial Hospital in Worcester after loosing
our Stacey five years ago. We (I in particular) found it a wonderful
way to deal with my grief. I suggest they contact whichever hospital
(Perhaps Emerson or Brigham&Womens?) to see if they are running a group.

    My thoughts are with them.

    Lyn,

I know you got the info on Compassionate Friends from a previous noter.
However, having resently lost my newborn son to SIDS I would like to
offer some books that I and my family have found VERY helpful..

Roses in December by Marilyn Heavilin - (found in Christian Book Stores)
"will help you to deal with your loss, understand your grief, and
find your own roses in the dark days of your life. For Marilyn,
it was the death of three sons...

    If they lost a baby:

When A Baby Dies by Rana K Limbo & Sara Rich Wheeler
This book was the first one that I read and I am very thankful that
I read it in the first days after Preston died..it really help.

I hope this info will be helpful.

My sympathy to your friend and family...and to you. As a friend you will
    feel thier loss also.
