365.0. "Skin Tags" by CSC32::WILCOX (Back in the High Life, Again) Mon Sep 24 1990 10:48

I've talked to my gyn and know this is "normal", just am looking
for other's who share this side effect of pregnancy so I don't
feel like a weirdo!

Do any of you get little extra skin growths when you're pregnant?
I get these little bitty extra growths mostly in my underarms,
a few on my neck and chest. They go away afterwards. They're
just kind of icky.

    Liz,

A friend of mine had this problem, but she's never been pregnant
so that may just be coincidence in your case. From what I know,
however, they're called "skin tags" and all they are is extra skin
that hasn't been sloughed off. Try using an exfolient (gritty
cleanser) and see if that helps. I know Clinique makes ones (I've
used it before) and it's not too expensive. I've also heard that
this is very common, so I wouldn't worry about it. If you do decide
to use an exfolient, don't expect overnight results. I'll talk to
my girlfriend and see what she has to say...

    Liz,
I thought I was the only one!!!!! Thanks for bringing this up.
I got them while I was pregnant and still have a few left, but noticed
that they usually would come off while I was showering, I use one of
those sponges (can't remember the "official" name) that is for taking
    off rough skin, etc.
I talked to my ob/gyn and she said that it was pretty common due to
all the changes you go through. Then I noticed them on my mom too, I
think I started noticing them on her when she started her change of
life. Maybe it is hormone related????

If what you're talking about are small, sometimes enlongated
fleshy pieces of skin that dangle, usually off the neck or
underarm area, these are called "Skin Tags".

They are quite common, especially during and after pregnancy.
I developed several during both of my pregnancies. They are
easily removed by a doctor. Some doctors will insist on
running the removed 'tag' through pathology, others will
recognize it as a side-efect of pregnancy and not require
further action, thus bringing down the cost of the procedure.

I have heard that some people remove tags by tying a hair
or fine thread tightly around the base and letting nature
do its thing. I should drop off in a few days.

I had them, Liz. I was bothered by them because they look bad, but
they all went away after pregnancy. Since they hurt to forcibly remove
them, I mostly just left them alone.

I also got a bunch of those skin tags when I was pregnant. I think
they finally all went away not too long ago and it's been 1 1/2 years
since Shane was born. I also seemed to have gotten a lot more small
dark spots on my chest when I was pregnant and I think they've all
    stayed. :-(

They aren't dead skin that hasn't been sloughed off ... they are very much
alive with blood and all ... I have several now large ones on my back
that I'll have to get removed surgically one day.

The diddy ones can be removed by a number of means ...

tying a hair around it ...
cutting it off with sterile scissors and sterilizing with alcohol ...

Beware that the tying a hair or thread should only be done to very small
ones ... becasue the tag is living tissue with a blood supply and all, if
you cut off the supply to a large one, you can cause gangrene ... then
you've got trouble ...

So, like all things of this nature ... ask your doctor.

    Here's another one....

I got them on my neck and in the crook of my arm (inside part of the
elbow). With both pregnancies - and until recently, never when I
wasn't pregnant. Could I be approaching another change....

Normal apparently.... my wife got them in underarm area and a few
on chest while pregnant... most have gone away now... Chelsea is
7 months old now. But the weirdest one she got was on her upper
gum line near the back of her mouth...it came off once, then grew
back. Dentitst called it a 'pregnancy tumor' (that scared us!),
but it apparently is fairly normal ... it fell off and never grew
back in about fifth or sixth month of pregnancy... FWIW

My husband has gotten these for years. He had one removed by a doctor
and cut another one off himself when it started to irritate (and it
did bleed). The doctor told him they were normal.

These skin tags run in my family...apparently, that's typical of
"Italian-type" skin. When I got a bunch of them (20 or so) I had them
burned off. (This was probably ten years ago and I was not pregnant.)
When I was pregnant last year, more of them grew *and* the old ones got
larger and darker. Really attractive having a dot-to-dot drawing
    on my neck!

When the baby was a couple of months old, I got them burned off.
Besides being a little strange looking, I found that the larger ones
would get caught on clothes and feel uncomfortable. Plus, I was
concerned about the baby grabbing them and ripping them off my skin.
This is something I apparently would do to my Mom and her sisters when
    I was a baby!
