305.0. "Family Hikes/Picnics in New England" by WOODRO::CERIA (this space for rent) Tue Sep 04 1990 09:31

    Now that the foliage season in approaching for us New Englanders, I
    thought I would write a note on some easy family hikes for leaf
    peeping. There are several places around New Hampshire that are great
    views without to much difficulty getting to. My wife and I like to go
    on picnics and get a little exercise too, this is a great way to get
    some exercise and take the family. Our family consists of us, our
    9 month old daughter 'Taylor' and our 11 month old son 'Indy' (a black
    lab). Taylor rides on dad's back in a pack of course.

      I'll write a reply for some places I know of, and if anybody else has
    some places they'd like to share with us, go for it!

305.1W. Rattlesnake Mt.WOODRO::CERIAthis space for rentTue Sep 04 1990 09:4719
    W. Rattlesnake Mt. Elevation 1220' located in Holderness, N.H.
     Don't let the name scare you. This is an easy hike, 1/2 hour to the
    summit. Excellent view of Squam lake and lake Winnipesaukee. Whats nice
    about this hike is that, the closer to the summit you get the easier
    the hike gets, it flattens out as you go up. Plenty of room at the top
    to pick your spot and eat lunch.
      We just did this hike last weekend, and we took my wifes 4 year old
    neice 'Brittany'. The night before Brittany was complaining about
    walking from one end of the Royal Ridge mall in Nashua to the other and
    back. We figured we were in for it, she hiked W. Rattlesnake without
    any problem of complaint.

    Take rte 113 north off of rtes 25 and 3 in Holderness. Follow 113 a few
    miles, the parking lot in 1/2 mile past Rockywold/Deephaven camps. The
    parking lot is on the left.

    * NOTE: The W. Rattlesnake trail is ACROSS THE STREET from the parking
            lot. The trail out the back of the parking lot is to Mt.Morgan
            which is a nice views of the lake too, but a 2 hour hike!
305.2Mt. MajorWOODRO::CERIAthis space for rentTue Sep 04 1990 10:1912
    Mt. Major Elevation 1780' located in Alton, NH
    This hike is just a little over an hour and has a spectacular view of
    lake Winnipesaukee. The summit has almost a 360 degree view, there is a
    stone shelter on the summit also which has been vandalised <sp?>, not
    much left. This mountain is very popular for hikers of all ages, last
    time I went up there was three bus loads of kids getting ready to start
    the hike, I'm glad we were already down.

      Mt.Major parking lot is located off rte 11 in Alton towards Gilford.
    There is a sign on rte 11 for the parking lot.

305.3Goffstown...HYSTER::DELISLETue Sep 04 1990 10:2510
    Mt. Kearsarge (sp?) in Goffstown NH is supposed to be an extremely easy
    hike for children. I read an article in one of the NH papers, and they
    were discussing this very subject - introducing children to hiking.
    They mentioned a couple of places but this is the only one that stuck
    in my mind cause it's close to where we live. But supposedly the
    author of the article is publishing a book on easy mountain hikes in
    the New England region. I am looking for it, loving hiking but having
    four little ones. If anyone knows about the book or the hike up Mt
    Kearsarge, I'd love to know more!

305.4Mt Kearsarge infoMOIRA::FAIMANlight upon the figured leafTue Sep 04 1990 11:0311
Mt Kearsarge is indeed one of the easiest hikes in New Hampshire, since the
parking lot is very near the top of the mountain -- the hike can't be more
than 1/2 mile or so. The drive up the mountain is beautiful, and the view
from the top is magnificent (Kearsarge is the highest peak in that part of
the state).

However, it isn't in Goffstown, but in Warner. You would have to take 93 to
Concord, then 89 up several exits to Warner. Follow the signs to the state
park.

A great first hike for small children.
305.5Douglas Mountain, Sebago, MaineSUCCES::JORDANTue Sep 04 1990 13:1011
    We just hiked on Douglas Mountain this weekend in Sebago,
    Maine, just off Route 107. Our crew included kids of these
    ages: 3, 4, 7, and 11. The parking lot is near the top;
    the climb to the top is about 1/4 mile. You can take The
    Ledges trail, which gets a bit steep but was okay for the
    youngsters. The Woods trail ascends slowly. (We went up by
    way of The Ledges and down by way of The Woods.) Nice views
    from The Ledges. There's a stone tower at the top for a
    panoramic view of other mountains and of the Sebago Lake
    region. From the tower, we took the 1/2 mile nature trail,
    which loops back to the tower.
305.6Addendum to KearsargeICS::RYANMon Sep 17 1990 09:5514
    A second on Kearsarge! My wife and 2.5 year old son did it this sunday.
    Warner is exit 8 off of 89, ~1 hour from Nashua. Well marked with signs
    from the highway to the parking lot. Kearsarge is above treeline with
    an excellent view! Picnic tables in the parking lot (nice) - about 30ft
    up the trail another picnic area with grass and just a few tables
    (even nicer). Rustic restrooms at parking lot and near the top.

    Trail is mostly rock and for a little boy who gives us trouble walking
    the 300 ft from the beach parking lot to the sand, Marc bolted up the
    trail all by himself! (I've confirmed my hiking buddy!) What a
    wonderful file - woke up sunday and said hey why not do the hike I
    extracted from the parenting file - what a nice day!
