230.0. "prominent ears" by 57790::LALIBERTE () Wed Aug 08 1990 11:22

I would like to hear from people who have had experiences with
children (or themselves) who have prominent/protruding ears.

Specifically, does anyone know the details of the type of ear surgery
    which pins them back....

My goddaughter is seven. She has large ears which just plain stick out.
Her mother is concerned that she will be ridiculed by other kids altho
this has not happened yet. She has been wearing her hair over her ears
all her life. She is a very cute child and I would go so far to say
the ears are cute at this stage of the game.

PLEASE NOTE : her mother would consider a surgical solution *ONLY* if
the child wanted it herself. As of yet, Sara has not shown any
indication that her ears bother her which is just fine with her mother.

But we would still like more info about the procedure. I have heard
that the surgery can be done outpatient.

I dunno if this is any help, but I have largish ears which stick out
and being male and wearing a fairly typical male haircut (!) I have
nothing to hide them ... but I cannot ever remember being teased about
them ... maybe it's because I'm also cross eyed ... wore glasses and
was as skinny as a rake that gave people other things to tease about
instead but kids tend to go for the whole works when they do. So my
feeling is that unless it becomes a problem, I wouldn't worry about it.

She still has a lot of growing to do, and they usually seem to flatten
out as they get older by themselves.

I had ears that stuck out as a kid. (I don't know if they were big, or if
they just protruded.) Even though I wore my hair long, it was very fine
and my ears always stuck out. The only teasing I EVER got about them was
from my sisters.

Now that I'm older, I don't consider my ears to be big, and I don't have a
problem with them sticking out from my hairdo. Maybe what Stuart (-.1)
said is true, that they flatten out as you get older.

I recall reading that the type of surgery is that they take a sort
of oval or elliptical shaped piece of cartilege out of the area
just behind the ear then stitch the incision closed. This draws
the ear closer to the head.
