210.1 | If I remember right..... | CRONIC::ORTH | | Wed Aug 01 1990 14:02 | 28 |
| Ooooh, boy! that taxes the memory!
I may be a bit off on a couple of words, but htis is how I remember it:
Puff, the magic dragon livd by the sea,
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee.
Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff
All wrought in strings and sealing wax,
and other fancy stuff, oh,
(chorus)
A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys.
Painted wings and giant strings make way for other toys.
One gray night it happened...
Jackie Paper came no more.
And Puff, that mighty dragon,
He ceased his fearless roar.
His head was bent in sorrow.
Green scales fell like rain.
Puff no longer went to play, along the cherry lane.
Without his lifelong friend, Puff could not be brave.
So Puff, that mighty dragon, sadly slipped into his cave, OH,
(chorus, repeated 2X, i think)
How's that sound? About right?

"Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff
And brought him strings and sealing wax
And other fancy stuff"
(Chorus - which you already have)
"Together they would travel
On a boat with billowed sail
Jackie kept a lookout perched on Puff's gigantic tail
Noble kings and princes would bow whene'er they came.
Pirate ships would lower their flags
When Puff roared out his name.
(Chorus)
A dragon lives forever but not so little boys.
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys.
One gray night it happened - Jackie Paper came no more.
And Puff that mighty dragon - he ceased is fearless roar.
(Chorus)
His head was bent in sorrow. Green scales fell like rain.
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his lifelong friend Puff could not be brave,
So Puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped in to his cave.
(Chorus)
- by Peter, Paul, & Mary
* Did this from memory - hope it's right - I also think the chorus is
sung two times at each occurance * Sung this to my children many times
until they asked me not to anymore - with my voice I don't blame
them...

| -.1 has it right except that the song starts with the chorus (sung one
time) and every time thereafter the chorus is sung twice.

210.5 | Just make believe for a while | 29805::DONAHUE | | Wed Aug 08 1990 14:01 | 8 |
| I have always like this song. For some reason I just let go and make
believe whenever I hear it.
I'm expecting my first child in October and you can bet s/he will hear
about ole' Puff!!
Thanks for giving me a breather. Just reading the lyrics did wonders.

210.6 | Paranoia maybe? | MAMTS3::MWANNEMACHER | let us pray to Him | Thu Aug 09 1990 17:15 | 10 |
| I remember that people were saying that it was a drug song. I don't
buy it.
Since becoming a parent it is about kids growing up and going into the
world on their own. The big question is, "Who is Puff?" Oh I don't
know maybe an old favorite stuffed animal, or favorite toy........maybe
mom or dad. gulp.:'(

210.7 | "My Favorite Things" | NUTMEG::MACDONALD_K | | Thu Sep 06 1990 18:06 | 13 |
| I looked at another note in this file about requesting song lyrics
from note 1325 in the MUSIC conference, but somehow it didn't seem
appropriate. The note was more about parents wanting to know of
"album contents" and whether or not it is appropriate for thier kids,
so I'll ask here if anyone knows all the lyrics to the song "My
Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music. I know most of it, but
there's a verse with something about strudel and noodles that I can't
remember. If anybody could write down the whole song, I'd really
appreciate it.
Thanks,
Kathryn

| Raindrops on roses
and whiskers on kittens
bright copper kettles
and warm woolen mittens
brown paper packages
tied up with string
These are a few of my favorite things.
Cream colored ponies
and crisp apple strudel
door bells and sleigh bells
and Schnitzel (sp?) with noodles
wild geese that fly
with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things.
Girls in white dresses
with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay
on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters
that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things
(Chorus)
When the dog bites
when the bee stings
when I'm feeling sad
I simply remember
my favorite things
and then I don't feel
So bad.
I confident of the content of the verses and pretty confident of their
order but I couldn't tell you exactly when/how many times the chorus is sung and
how many times the verses are repeated. (They are repeated.)
I'll play the disk tonight and double check. (And since my modem and
phone line are working again (after 4(!) months and varous trips by the phone
company), I'll actually be able to enter it tonight!! Yeah!)

| Thanks so much Tracey! I knew all the words at one time, but I think
I must be getting old or something. Every night I sing to my daughter
and I find myself doing this a lot:
"Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens,
blah, blah, blah, blah, blah and warm woolen mittens..."
You get the idea.
Thanks again,
Kathryn

210.12 | The definitive answer :-) | TCC::HEFFEL | Sushido - The way of the tuna | Fri Sep 07 1990 22:52 | 11 |
| Just listened to the disk. Amazingly enough, I had it exactly right in
.8 right down to the order of the verses. (Sound of arm breaking
while patting self on back. :-) ) (You take your victories where you
can find them. This is apparently the only thing I've done right
today....)
The order is sing all three verses, then the chorus, then repeat the
whole thing.

FWIW: On the PP&M 25th Anniversary Special, Peter Yarrow said, during the
introduction to "Puff", something like "People have asked me if this song
is about drugs, but it's really just about the loss of innocence. And now
you've heard it from the dragon's father's mouth"

210.14 | Hannalei, Kuai | MUTT::DORIS | | Thu May 23 1991 16:36 | 7 |
| In case anyone is still looking at replies on this note, I just came
back from a trip to Hawaii and one of the islands that I went to was
Kauai. There is a place there called Hannalei which is supposed to be
the place where PP&M were writing about in the song. It was beautiful
there, just like the song!

| Hey Doris,
It's always refreshing to hear someone was in Hawaii. That is where
I am from. And boy do I miss home.
Yes HANALEI is one of the most beautiful bays in Hawaii. Infact there
are a lot of songs about Hanalei.
There is one called Hanalei Moon, I think it is a wedding song. I will
look for the words and enter them here if anyone is interested.
And about good ole PUFF. My dad named his boat PUFF. Although the
first one sunk in 82 and he has sold PUFF II already for a bigger one
and his current boat is PUFF III. He used to sing that song to me all
the time when I was small (always young!)...
