196.1 | hope its an ok topic for parenting... | HPSRAD::LINDSEY | | Fri Jul 27 1990 18:09 | 7 |

P.S. I hope no one minds me entering this in Parenting. I also put
the note in consumers...I really wasn't sure where, but figured with
all the little babies celebrating their birthdays soon, someone would
have some good leads.

| I live in Worcester, and where I went for my baby's first B-day
cake was Scano's Bakery on Hamilton St. I got a devils food
chocolate cake. They have two types of frostings availiable,
whipped cream or itailian cream. Both are yummy. They will do
character cakes also, like Big Bird or whatever. I would highly
reccomend (sp?) them. You only need to give them a couple days
notice to bake them. Excellent. There is also one on Shrewsbury
St. in Worcester.

My sister-in-law frequents the Alden Merrell bakery and their cakes are
wonderful. There's a branch located in Sudbury. My daughter also has an
upcoming birthday and I'm planning to purchase a cake but I haven't
decided if I want to get an ice cream cake yet. This is her 1st
birthday so I don't want to get carried away. Also, you may check the
Widoff bakery in Worcester.

| I've heard good things about Crown Bakery on Gold Star Blvd but have
never used them myself. For my son's birthday, I plan to make/buy
a carrot, applesauce, or some similar type cake that can be sweetened
with cinnamon, allspice, etc. I just don't think he needs the extra
sugar and chocolate at the tender age of one!
Just my opinion, cj/

(NH) was giving free birthday cakes for the first birthday.

196.7 | Crown Bakery | LANDO::AHARRIS | | Tue Jul 31 1990 13:41 | 2 |
| Another vote for the Crown Bakery on Gold Star Boulevard. This Swedish
bakery has been in business for years and has an excellent reputation.

My daughters first birthday was in september. I went to Scanos on
Shrewbury street. The cake I ordered was a half sheet it fed 30 people
and cost 15.00. It was really good and they did a nice decoration on
it.

196.9 | BIG Y in Worcester has nice cakes | MCIS5::TRIPP | | Thu Nov 07 1991 12:20 | 18 |
| The Big Y supermarket opened over the weekend, on Route 20 in
Worcester. I was impressed with their bakery. It appears that they
stock on a regular basis some very nice sheetcakes, all appeared to be
priced at a standard $13.99. There were the usual flowers and writing,
and many others with kid and sport themes, including plastic things
like hockey and football, juvenile things like plastic multicolor
trains, and some "murals" painted on the top. With a variety like that
I'd say I may never have to order in advance again. The also seemed to
have many varieties of decorated large cookies.
It's almost too bad the place was so horribly mobbed, waiting for a
parking place, a shopping cart etc. They seemed well stocked, and had
many familiar-to-kids characters like the Keebler Elf, Harry Hood, I
say someone carrying Big Bird's head, but never did see the character.
I finally gave up with fighting the crowds with AJ, and left to do
shopping at my regular place.

196.10 | Birthday Cake - Bakeries | DEMING::WATSON | | Tue Jan 28 1992 10:24 | 16 |
| Can anyone recommend a bakery in the central Massachusetts area
that will make cartoon birthday cakes? I'd also prefer a flavor
of our choice, rather than white, marble, or chocolate.
My daughter will be 1 in February and I'd like to order some sort
of cartoon cake for her birthday. I tried calling Richards Fine
Foods and Cake Emporium in Westboro, but the number was disconnected.
Their ad mentioned cartoon cakes.
We live in Dudley and work in Hudson, so anything in the area
is acceptable.
Thank you for any suggestions---please send me VAXmail at BIGQ::WATSON

I don't remember the name of the place, but there is a bakery on the
main drag in Maynard (across from the mill) that has a book with all
the different types of decorations/designs they will do. If someone
else could remember the name of the place maybe you could give them
a call.

196.13 | Cakes By Felice - Milford MA | TBEARS::JOHNSON | | Tue Jan 28 1992 10:57 | 11 |
| Oh I remember this search well. I searched high and low for
a Big Bird cake for Steven's birthday and ended up being dissatified
with the result. Last year, for birthday #2, I made my own.
There is a fairly new cake shop in Milford, MA called
"Cakes By Felice" It's on Rt 140 and they may have what you
are looking for and they are located in between Dudley and Hudson.
Sorry I don't have the phone number though.
Good luck!

196.15 | Debbie Grass, Nashua | NOVA::WASSERMAN | Deb Wasserman, DTN 264-1863 | Tue Jan 28 1992 11:25 | 6 |
| This isn't too close to central Mass, but I thought I'd post it
anyway... I have a friend in Nashua who works for herself doing cake
decorating. She can use pratically any picture, photo, whatever, and
duplicate it on the cake. The results are really amazing! I'm sure
cartoons would be no problem. And the cakes are yummy, also! Her
name is Debbie Grass, phone (603) 888-3420. Tell her I recommended her.

196.16 | Evie's Cake Crafts | DEMING::WATSON | | Tue Jan 28 1992 12:01 | 9 |
| Thank you for your replies! I didn't see this note when I wrote
mine (the moderator moved it for me). Someone recommended
Evie's Cake Crafts on route 140 in Shrewsbury, which is where we'll
try first. Supposedly they can make a Little Mermaid cake, which is
the only cartoon that Kaitlin has really seen yet.
Meanwhile, I'll keep these others in mind for future cakes.

196.17 | some ideas for *our* area | MCIS5::TRIPP | | Tue Jan 28 1992 13:01 | 32 |
| You live in Dudly, hmmmm... (howdy neighbor, from Oxford)
Anyway I have a few thoughts, one is Hickey's Bakery on Oxford St Auburn.
This is the street that runs off of route 12 beside the Picadilly Pub.
The other is a gal named Brenda who runs the invitation and favor
department at Ziff paperworld in Worcester. She makes one dynamite
carrot cake, I've also tasted her yellow and chocolate cakes just as
good. She did a real unique design for my father inlaw's retirement,
as well as a couple very customized cakes for me. I think she lives in
Spencer, and can at times deliver the cakes to you.
I was also impressed with the cartoon designs at both Big Y on route
20, and Park N' Shop. Although I have no personal experience with what
the cake flavors are like.
Another option is to make a cake, frost it with either white or pastel
and go to Ziff. They have plastic figures designed to go on cakes.
Last year I bought the fire dept set and used it for hubby and AJ.
This year I bought the motorcycle set, and added 4 little plastic race
cars sold in their party favor dept. and just ran a red piped, tube
frosing, border around the top edges.
I've discovered that kid's don't really care what it looks like, only
that it tastes good.
One year I bought an ice cream cake at Carvel in Webster Square. It had
pastels of rainbows, hearts and nice things on it. It was premade and
in the freezer case. they write on it with gel.
Have fun!

196.18 | Switching to Crown Bakery | DEMING::WATSON | | Mon Feb 10 1992 10:48 | 6 |
| I stopped by Evie's Cake Crafts in Shrewsbury. They had loads of
cartoon characters and I did order a cake, but I'm going to cancel it
and order a spice cake with Little Mermaid on it from Crown Bakery
in Worcester. Unfortunately, Evies only makes white, yellow,
chocolate, and marble cakes and we wanted something a little less
bland. Their price was $22/cake. I don't know what Crown charges yet.
