| By any chance are you in England?
I think you may not have found any reference, because the US I
believe this is called cradle cap....

151.2 | Scurf or Cradle Cap ? | RHODES::SABOURI | | Wed Jul 18 1990 12:13 | 8 |

RE .1
No, I'm here in the States, at least by reading the description
of the 'scurf' in the baby's book I thought that's what is called,
however you may be right, it might be called something else.

151.3 | Sounds like Cradle Cap to me! | DELNI::KEEFE | | Wed Jul 18 1990 12:35 | 6 |
| Sounds like cradle cap to me also... drop a few drops of baby oil on
the baby scalp. Rub in in lightly with your fingers, then take a comb
and comb thru the baby hair. After a week or so it will disappear...
or I should say at least it did for my daughter.... But every baby is
different! Good luck!

| When my daughter had it, I used watered down Head & Shoulders and
a soft toothbrush and gently scrubbed it off. Then I put oil or
lotion on her head and it never came back.
If it comes back, wash the baby's scalp with the watered down Head
& Shoulders each time you bath him.
We have always called it cradle cap. Maybe scurf is and old name
for it.

yep, Bruce, that is exactly what we did. Didn't go away for quite a
while, but Robby eventually got enough hair to cover it.

| My daughter's pediatrician recommended washing her scalp everyday with
Fostex which is an acne soap. I'm not sure if it helped but the cradle
cap is gone now after 6 months.

151.9 | possibly sunburn? | TLE::RANDALL | living on another planet | Thu Jul 19 1990 11:21 | 8 |
| At this time of year in the northern hemisphere, if your child's
been outside at all, it could also be peeling or flaking skin from
a sunburn. Steven had that happen once -- the sun was shining in
the back window of the car onto the top of his head in the car
seat, so he got a band of sunburn there and nowhere else. We
didn't notice it until it started to peel.

151.10 | Ignore It | WFOV11::BRODOWSKI | | Fri Jul 20 1990 11:08 | 5 |
| I agree with Bruce. My 6 month old has it now - my older daughter
had it when she was an infant also. It will go away eventually.
Adrienne now has a full!!! head of hair.

151.11 | another vote for ignoring it! | CNTROL::STOLICNY | | Fri Jul 20 1990 11:14 | 5 |
| I agree with others...my 10 month old is about over it. I found
that you have to be religious in treating/scrubbing it or it
comes back anyways so when he got some hair, I just ignored it!

| there is another note in this file that mentions that build up
of sun blockers on the scalp can cause a similar condition.
my oldest had this as a baby and I used to gently comb it
with a fine comb to losen it and then wash with baby shampoo
on a wash cloth.
but I do agree, unless it looks really horrible, ignore it,
it will go away and it is harmless.

| My childbirth instructor said to get rid of cradle cap, you can
coat the babies head with vaseline before putting him/her to bed
one night. Then the next morning you brush it out. The dry skin
sticks to the vaseline. Then wash his/her hair.

| re: .13
and repeat this process until the child outgrows it. This
will get rid of cradle cap (like if your having a picture
taken) but won't *cure* it.
