84.0. "sesame street" by BUFFER::CHOW () Wed Jun 27 1990 15:28

Among my many unexpected surprises of parenthood, watching
Sesame Street with my two-year old daughter, Leah, has got to
be one of the more enjoyable. This morning they had a skit on
which featured a singer (who I believe was Smokey Robinson) and
this 5' tall pink letter "U". Smokey was singing his song that
contains the phrase "you really got a hold on me" and this letter
"U" was manhandling him and chasing him all over the screen. It
was hilarious, I ended up a bit later than usual for work and
that tune's been floating through my head all day.

Sometimes I find that when Leah and I are "watching Ernie" and
she gets distracted and wanders off, that I stay and watch Ernie
by myself. The other morning when dishing out Leah's morning
quota of breakfast raisins I though for a moment that I'd been
possessed by the Count because I was giving her the raisins one
by one and saying "one raisin, two raisin, three raisins...."

One of my fondest moments of "watching Ernie" history occurred
some time last year during one of Leah and my "let's_let_Mom_
sleep_in_late_on_Sunday_morning" routines. As we were sitting
on the couch watching, she started cuddling up to me in a very
deliberate and conscious manner. A major milestone and it makes
me want to forget all those my_child_is_a_monster times.

Now with Cory only being 11-weeks old, I can look forward to
several more years of "watching Ernie" with her after Leah gets
	too old for it............

Jim Hensen...thank you!! Sesame Street.....where would we be
	without ya?

I remember the same skit with Smokey Robinson. "You Really Got a
Hold on Me" is one of the big hits that he had when he was with
    the Miracles in the 1960s.

James and I are big fans of "The Teeny Little Super Guy." It
isn't on often, but I always howl when it is. Look for the one
where "my buddy, R.W." wants a pet spoon.

I agree that watching S.S. with your kid can be really nice. Yesterday,
Dan was in the throes of being Two (or 2.5 to be accurate), if you know
what I mean. He couldn't do anything without whining, objecting,
feeling generally out of sorts. Finally he walked over to the TV and
turned it on...S.S. was on. He watched the rest of the show with his Dad
to keep him company. By the end of the show his spirits were so much
better. This is a kid who normally doesn't watch much TV - but I guess
    he knew what he needed.

Now you have me singing my favorite S.S. songs:
Have you seen the one with the dolled up pigs reading street signs,
"I got a new way to walk -- walk walk--I got a new way to walk--walk
walk." I've sung that one for entire mornings.

Or a Muppet Z-Z Top band singing, "I got the Z-Z blues" .

Or the one with some other famous singer, singing, "You've got to take
the hand of someone you love, before you cross the street"

I love my son watching that show. It's so neat to see him singing
along, laughing out loud, shouting out the letters or numbers ahead of time.
We took hin to see the Sesame Street Live show and he was totally
    enthralled. (So was I!)

My favorite is "Rebel L" (a send-up of Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell").

Sadly, we are now without Jim Henson. Yet he lives on in our hearts (and on

I'll never forget the morning JA was flinging cheerios and totally
griefing me (as I was trying to get ready to leave for work). JA
couldn't have been much older than 6 months of age.

Out of desperation, I turned the kitchen TV onto SS and turned
around her highchair. She was totally fascinated!!! She was
speechless, her eyes were glued to the TV and one by one she was
    feeding herself cheerios!

Well, I was still late for work! (You see, I was equally glued to
    SS!).

    Dottie

PS: I'll NEVER forget the look on JA's face when she was tearing
around the rec room in her walker and Big-Bird came flashing
in full-life-size over the widescreen TV ... she nearly had
a heart attack! She stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes got
huge and instead of exhaling, she was slowly inhaling with this
kind of screech coming out of her! Then her walker did a wheelie
at 40 mph! (I nearly wet my pants from laughing!)

And my second fave is .4's ("I got a new way to walk... walk walk")

Did everyone read (in the "People" cover story) that Mrs. Henson's
condolence card from Disney was a cel of Mickey Mouse with his arm
around Kermit, both of them looking at a glorious sunset? (*sniff*)

We love the Teeny Super Little Guy too. We all sing the song, and
when Jacob was born, that's what we always called him.

Sesame street started when I was in elementry school. They use somne
of the same stuff from way back then even. It's good because I already
know the words to alot of the songs/skits and Aisha and Jake like
it when Mommy can sing along.

I was just about to reply my favorite was "You gotta put down the ducky if
you wanna play the saxophone" and then I read your reply!

I enjoy watching it, too. They usually have interesting celebraties on it.
When my son was home sick once last winter, we watched it a couple of times
and saw Jay Leno on one, and Candice Bergman on another.

My son (age 2) likes it alot, but once or twice a day he'll come running
toward me saying "Cookie Monster trying to get me!" and he seems a little
scared. It's hard to believe anyone could be afraid of Sesame St. char-
acters. (Sometimes it's Count who's trying to get him!, but usually it's
Cookie Monster.) Sheesh!

I remember watching SS in high school with my little
sister (11 years difference) and wondering why a show targeted at
preschoolers could still be funny and entertaining to a
teen-ager. Well know that my daughter (soon to be 2) is into
Sesame I've started to catch on to some of the more sutle humor
directed at the adults watching with their children. I can't
remember any specifics off the top of my head but I do recall on
a number of occasion thinking to my self that's a funny line but
that a child would not catch the humor in that.

Considering that the show is produced, written and
performed by adults it only make sense that they have to keep it
interesting for themselves as well as the children.

    re. 12, 13

Actually, one of the original goals of Sesame Street was to get
parents to watch the show with their kids. In this way, the parents
could help support and reinforce what kids were learning.

For this reason, the show's always included elements designed to
engage an adult's interest as well as a child's.

My two and a half year old son is wary of a few things on Sesame St.
First is Oscar's pet elephant. My wife was watching with our son one
day when the phone rang. She went to get it and when she came back
in Tyler was sitting shaking on the couch. We've now learned to turn
off the T.V. when the elephant is going to be on but sometimes we're
    a little late.

    re. the adult humor.

I can't remember the specifics but Elmo and (I think) Big Bird were
playing at one of the kids house and they were pretending to go to the
moon. Well Elmo fell asleep when Gordon (now I remember) read the
story that one of them had written. The book was in the context of
Good Night Moon. As they were carrying Elmo out to go home, he raised
his head off Gordon's shoulder and said "Good Night Moon." I laughed
and Tyler looked at me like I was crazy.

There's a brand new dance and it's got a reggae beat.

Get in the tub, hold your duckie in your lap.
Tap your toes while you scrub in the water from the tap.

And do de duck, rubber duck duck rubber duck rubber duck,
duck rubber duck duck rubber duck duck,
rubber duck duck rubber duck
rubber duck duck rubber duck rubber duck duck.

Come on everybody try (do de rubber duck)
Don't be left high and dry (yeah do de rubber duck)
As you keep on getting wetter (do de rubber duck)
You'll be feelin' so much better (do de rubber duck)

You'll be left without a care (when you do de rubber duck)
And you can even wash your hair (while you do de rubber duck)
It will have a healthy sheen (if you do de rubber duck)
Yeah you'll be squeaky clean (when you do de rubber duck)

And do de duck, rubber duck duck rubber duck rubber duck,

rubber duck duck rubber duck
rubber duck duck rubber duck rubber duck duck.

Don't get soap in your eye (when you do de rubber duck)
Cause that'll make you cry (when you do de rubber duck)

Hey all you grouches sing (now do de rubber duck)
Really make the bathtub ring (do de rubber duck)

Take a least one bath a day (do de rubber duck)
And you'll moo those germs away (do de rubber duck)

And while you wash away your troubles (do de rubber duck)
Don't forget to count the bubbles...ONE TWO THREE FOUR!

MONSTER IN THE MIRROR

Saw a monster in the mirror when I woke up today.
A monster in my mirror, but I did not run away.
I did not shed a tear or hide beneath my bed.
The monster looked at me and this is what he said,

He said "Wabba wabba wabba wabba woo woo woo.
Wabba wabba wabba and a doodleedoo."
He sang "Wabba wabba wabba" and I sang it too.
Do not wabba me or I will wabba you.
(Do not wabba me or I will wabba you.)

Told the monster in the mirror "No I am not scared."
I smiled at him and thanked him for the song that we had shared.
The monster thanked me too, he smiled right back and then,
The monster in the mirror sang the song again.

He said "Wabba wabba wabba wabba woo woo woo.
Wabba wabba wabba and a doodleedoo."
He went "Wabba wabba wabba" and I sang along.
Yes wabba wabba wabba is a monster's song.

(He said "Wabba wabba wabba wabba woo woo woo.
Wabba wabba wabba and a doodleedoo."
He went "Wabba wabba wabba" and I sang along
Yes wabba wabba wabba is a monster's song.)

If your mirror has a monster in it do not shout.
This kind of situation does not call for freaking out.
And do nothing that you wouldn't like to see him do,
Cause that monster in the mirror, he just might be you,

Singing "Wabba wabba wabba wabba woo woo woo.
Wabba wabba wabba and a doodleedoo."
"Wabba wabba wabba" you can join in too.
Yes if you wabba me then I will wabba you.
(If you wabba me then I will wabba you.)
Going "Wabba wabba wabba" is the thing to do.
(Everytime you wabba us we'll wabba you.)

FURRY BLUE MOMMY

When day is ending and shadows grow long,
Who waits at home to sing me a song?
There's only one who makes me feel fine,
That furry blue mommy of mine.

When I am sick who makes sure I get well?
Who helps me learn to read and to spell?
Both me and daddy thinks she's divine,
That furry blue mommy of mine.

I see her face before me now,
so beautiful and shy.
As furry as a polar bear,
And bluer than the sky.

Who cooks my dinner and washes my socks?
Cute as a bug and strong as an ox.
Special and sweet, she's my valentine,
That furry blue mommy,
Oh I love you mommy,
That furry blue mommy of mine.

THE FLY SONG

A fly flew on my toe,
A fly flew on my toe,
It flew on my toe and I wanted it to go

OH goodbye fly, fly listen to my song.
Goodbye fly, fly back where you belong.

A fly flew on my knee,
A fly flew on my knee,
It flew on my knee and that bothered me,
It flew on my toe and I wanted it to go

OH goodbye fly, fly listen to my song.
Goodbye fly, fly back where you belong.

A fly flew on my thigh,
A fly flew on my thigh,
It flew on my thigh, I wanted to cry,
It flew on my knee and that bothered me,
It flew on my toe and I wanted it to go

OH goodbye fly, fly listen to my song
Goodbye fly, fly back where you belong.

A fly flew on my chest,
A fly flew on my chest,
It flew on my chest and it wasn't the best,
It flew on my thigh, I wanted to cry,
It flew on my knee and that bothered me,
It flew on my toe and I wanted it to go

OH goodbye fly, fly listen to my song
Goodbye fly, fly back where you belong.

A fly flew on my nose,
A fly flew on my nose,
It flew on my nose and that's bad I suppose,
It flew on my chest and it wasn't the best,
It flew on my thigh, I wanted to cry,
It flew on my knee and that bothered me,
It flew on my toe and I wanted it to go

OH goodbye fly, fly listen to my song
Goodbye fly, fly back where you belong.

A fly flew in my hair,
A fly flew in my hair,
It flew in my hair, I didn't want it there,
It flew on my nose and that's bad I suppose,
It flew on my chest and it wasn't the best,
It flew on my thigh, I wanted to cry,
It flew on my knee and that bothered me,
It flew on my toe and I wanted it to go

OH goodbye fly, fly listen to my song
Goodbye fly, fly back where you belong.

I must admit, we haven't been watching as much SS this past week as

Oddly enough, my 2 year old has turned against SS and says "No watch

I agree that there _is_ adult humor tucked in some of the scripts. My

this may have been mentioned before but the adult humor on Sesame
Street is deliberate. One of the program goals from the outset was to
get parents to watch with their kids and to get parents to reinforce
the concepts and ideas introduced on the programs. Hence the adult humor
and the use of actors, etc. who would be known to parents.

sorry, I've forgotten who put in that reply) too as that sounds
like a neat store and I'm in that area a lot.

So thanks again everybody. I'm sure Ally will have her beloved
Oscar soon. I'm certainly glad I asked this question here.

Don't quote me on this, but I'm almost positive I saw "Oscar" at
Raschel's on Route 9 east in Westboro, Ma.

I know they have big bird, Burt and Ernie, etc.

Raschel's did have a few of Oscar the last time I was
there (about a month ago probably) but he was sitting
in a submarine or some sort of silver thing anyway. (8

Nope... I know it wasn't his trash can. It looks to be
as though he was sitting in a submarine type thing.
(I could see something resembling a port hole (?) window)

84.41Bob McGrath record??PERFCT::TRIPPWed Jul 31 1991 14:5210
I saw Bert, Ernie and almost all the characters in the stuffed toy
aisle at Toys R Us in Auburn last Saturday. Hope this isn't too late!

On a related topic, there's a new recording out of SS songs, sung by
Bob Mc Grath of SS, has anyone seen it in the Central MA area? I tried
Strawberries at White City about a month ago and they didn't even have
it on their new release list. I think I'd prefer a cassette, if not a
    CD will do.

My son just loves game show host "Guy Smiley". For some reason this is
his favorite character. He likes Ernie, Big Bird & Elmo, but Guy
Smiley draws the most excitement from him. Has anyone ever seen a Guy
    Smiley doll or puppet?

There was a great store I went to check in the Pheasant Lane Mall here
in Nashua but they have gone out of business. I remember that they had
all kinds of SS and Cartoon characters.

Any pointers to local stores would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Donna

Figured this notesfile would be as good a place to ask this as any...

On Sesame Street, there's this two-headed purple monster with
Viking-style horns on both heads. The two halves of this monster
constantly talk to each other in gibberish.

Does this monster have a name (besides "Two-Headed Monster")?

    Thanks,

Does anyone know who plays the Spelling Fairy? I think her character's
name is Glenda or Glinda or something. I caught part of a show
[actually I heard the show, my kids watch it at 3.30 while I veg-out
with the morning paper] where she was putting word signs on everything.
I think she's great! of course, ALL of the characters are -- and the
    two-headed monster is just super!

    thanks.

My son has been singing a song lately that he says he learned from

sings them over and over and over. Can someone translate the following

    re .51:
Hahahaha! My son David just became addicted to that song a couple of
weeks ago. I couldn't figure out the tune from listening to him, so
we bought one of the (audio) tapes that has the song on it. And I
discovered that he was singing the tune just like Cookie Monster!
That monster has not much sense of pitch ...

Does anybody have a problem with kids imitating Cookie Monster's eating
habits? My 2-year old always wants to shove food into his mouth and
gobble it down, just like Cookie Monster does with cookies. I'm really
having a hard time convincing him to take small bites and chew his
food. He's such a difficult eater I hate having to reprimand him when
he eats, but he alwys chokes if I leave him alone. Asking him to slow
down doesn't work, neither does cutting his food into small pieces...he
    just shoves a handful in!

Most definitely! We play tiger while eating dinner, as Nathan growls
and snarls--with -1, a light comes on and now I know we have Cookie at
the table with us! Luckily, Nathan has never been a choker, 'cus he
eats a full mouthful at a time, and snarls at the same time!

    So much fun...
