68.0. "no appetite in 1 year old" by ELMAGO::PHUNTLEY () Mon Jun 25 1990 21:11

    Is it normal for the appetite to become more selective and decrease
    dramatically in a one year old? Joshua used to eat 2-3 jars of
    food 3-4 times a day and would eat anything and everything. Lately
    all he wants to eat are peanut butter crackers and very few of even
    that. Up until his first birthday he ate like a horse but now picks
    and would rather throw his food than eat it. (or start in on the
    cat food-but that is in another note) I do not force him to eat
    and know if he gets hungry enough he will eat. I know I've read
    in other notes to give them a supplement and don't worry-it's a
    phase.

    BTW-Josh shows no signs of being sick at all, but does seem to be
    cutting his 9th tooth.

    Thanks!

Pam

Josh is cutting teeth, the heat and just plain old stop in
growing for a while will result in needing less food.

Be sure he gets a regular dose of vitamins and lots of liquids
while he's hot.

    For one thing, his growth rate is slowing dramatically. An infant
    doubles its weight at a rate that would make it, if I remember
    correctly, 180 lbs. at age 2 if the growth didn't slow
    dramatically. And when they're not growing as fast, their need
    for food to fuel the growth declines naturally.

I have a cousin who is a pedi up in Canada, and when he was down to visit a
little while ago, he said to be prepared for the 1-year-old loss of
appetite. He calls it the "orchid phase" because parents swear that their
kids are drawing nutrients out of the air. Sure enough, almost exactly on
schedule, Jimmy has chucked the whole eating thing and seems to be living on
next to nothing. If he's healthy and happy, then he's getting enough to eat,
even if you don't know how. They come out of it.

    yep, Ryan did the same thing last summer. Spent weeks eating only
    grapes, or only waffles or only blueberries.... and then it all
    reverted to "normal" meals.

68.6Not another MEAL!ICS::THEALLTue Jun 26 1990 13:4410
    I am so glad to hear all of these responses. I have been so concerned
    about Samantha lately. All she wants to eat are Hot Dogs so I have
    been giving her Turkey Dogs and she will eat them. However she eats
    nothing else. She won't touch fruit or vegetables. At night she still
    wants her cookie and milk for dessert.

    I hope this is just a phase because I do not look forward to going home
    because I know that meal time is next.

68.7"Four days" is _not_ a typoMINAR::BISHOPTue Jun 26 1990 22:537
    Natural History had an article about baby hooded seals. They will gain
    80 pounds in four days (doubling their weight), and then stop eating
    for a month.

    It's not just human babies...

    Which reminds me that when Kat came out of her eating slump at
    about 20 months, we were at a pizza restaurant. She liked pizza a
    lot -- usually she'd eat at least four or five bites before she
    declared herself stuffed. This day she ate THREE SLICES. And
    then wanted dessert.

    This is so normal, I wish I could eat like my son and then
    stop for awhile, maybe I could lose some weight by just eating
    grapes all week! I think kids go thru these phases all the time.
    Alex eats like a horse for awhile, and then only eats, of all things,
    raw green beans for a week (yuck), then he only wants steak with
    dipping sauce (ranch dressing) - then the following week eats
    everything in the refrig. Makes life a bit more challenging.

    When you think about it - little kids eat when they are hungry. Not at
    all like their parents who have hangups up the kazoo about what, when,
    etc to eat. My 8 year old lived on peanut butter and bagels from the
    time he could chew them and he is certainly none the worse for wear.

    And there was the year (5-6) when he gained 14 lbs on air alone!

    As my mother would say "No child ever starved to death in sight of a
    refrigerator!"

68.11no appetite in 1, 2 3 or 4 year old!ISTG::DAVILAThu Sep 06 1990 15:0311
I worried a lot when this happened to Marisa, my oldest.

Now she's 4 and a half, and she still eats like a bird, but a little more when
she's hungry.

Lisa, who is three, use to be a moose for about 2 years, and now eats very
little also.

As long as they look happy and don't get too sick, don't force it down!
