53.0. "too much sleep???" by BTOVT::BARBOUR_T () Thu Jun 21 1990 16:46

My daughter just turned 7 years old and I have a question...

How much sleep should a healthy child get? Now that school is out
I let her stay up later (9ish) and she sleeps until 7am . She is
no longer taking naps but still seems to not be in any hurry to go to
    bed, even at 9.

What do you think is an average amount of sleep needed by an active
    child?

    Thanks

Well, let me tell you abou the range.

When my healthy normal eldest daughter was seven, she'd get up at
about 7:00 to get ready for school. When she got home, she'd have
a 30-minute to 2-hour nap about four days a week. Then she'd be
ready for bed by 8:30 or 9. She didn't give up the afternoon nap
completely until she was almost 10.

My healthy normal six-year-old son goes to bed at 10:00 p.m. on a
good night and gets up at 6:30 most of the time. No naps.
Sometimes stays awake later than we do.

The only thing we've been able to figure out is that if they seem
healthy and normal, and aren't crabby and bleary-eyed, they're
probably getting enough sleep, and whatever that child needs is
    normal.

Up to 12 hours of sleep at night is not at all unusual. Tom (now 6-1/2)
slept 10-12 hours at night fairly consistently until the last couple of
months, where it's now down to 8-9 hours, but he is napping for two hours
during the day.

I'd say it's nothing to worry about. Most kids don't get as much sleep as
they need. (Especially teenagers.... then again, most adults don't either!)

That sounds normal to me. I was always in bed by 9 and up by 6ish
until I entered college!!!! I never fell asleep in class, got all A's
and I was very athletic kid. Everyone kid's schedule is different.
If your kid is healthy and prospering, don't worry about it.
