7.1 | Adoption Notesfile | TCC::HEFFEL | Cogito ergo spud - I think therefore I yam. | Wed Jun 06 1990 14:40 | 28 |
| Laura Ervin has asked me to post this as she does not follow the
conference. We would like to reach the widest audience to get the
word out to people that are personally involved in the adoption
triad.
**********************************************************************
I have just set up a closed notes file (member only) for people who are part
of the adoption triad. I have decided to start this notes file because I
have received several requests from people who are not comfortable noting on
this subject in an open notes file.
If you are interested in membership in this closed file please let me know
and I will register you as a member of the conference and send you further
information as to the location of the conference.
If you know of anyone who would be interested in membership in this
conference, please pass the information on. The purpose of this
conference is not to educate the general population about adoption, but
rather to provide a safe forum where triad members can discuss issues and
find support. Requests for access to the file can be sent to me at
SONATA::ERVIN, TOP40::ERVIN or AMFM::ERVIN.
If you have any questions about the file, please contact me.
Regards,
Laura (who is an adoptee)

Note 1.0 Welcome to the Part-Time Work Conference 4 replies
ZONULE::DINES 48 lines 3-OCT-1989 14:40
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to the Part-Time Work Issues Conference! The purpose of this
conference is to serve as a networking tool for prospective and current
part-time Digital employees.
There are currently nearly 700 men and women working less than 40 hours at
Digital's U.S. sites. Some are working part-time, some are job sharing,
some are job splitting. Although this represents less than 1 percent of
the work force, it is perhaps a greater percentage than at any other
Fortune 100 company today. As a result, there are very few role models in
the industry for Digital management to turn to - we are truly pioneering
this opportunity for all U.S. employees, for the 1990's and beyond.
Opportunities for part-time Digital employment appear to be growing (In
July 1987, there were 454 permanent part-time U.S. employees), but there
still appears to be a greater "demand than supply" for these positions.
The main reasons why there is resistance to structuring part-time positions
are: 1) Heads are counted one-for-one, rather than on an equivalent basis;
2) Managers are conditioned to think about jobs in terms of 40 hour time
slots; and 3) There is a lack of knowledge about how to manage part-time
employees.
There is certainly a wealth of information available within the company
about alternative work schedules. It is my hope that a successful notes
file will provide a much needed resource for employees and managers who
want to try to make an alternative work schedule work, but need more
information. Some of the material suitable for this notes file include
success stories, how to structure a part-time position that avoids
potential pitfalls, contact names for managers that have made it work
successfully, and Digital policy information.
In addition, there is a need to link up part-time employees interested in
seeking new employment, managers with part-time positions, and individuals
interested in job-sharing. It is hoped that this conference will allow and
encourage communication among this small, but growing segment of the
company, as well as those who support the alternative work schedule
concept. The first 20 topics are reserved for this very important role.
This conference will begin with an initial set of topics. Please feel free
to add other topics if you believe that it is in the interest of promoting
the information-sharing network for part-time Digital employees.
The October 1989 edition of Working Mother surveyed the top 60 companies
for opportunities for women. Digital was highly rated, and included an
interesting comment: "opportunities for part-time and job-sharing have
started from the bottom up". In keeping with this philosophy, YOU can make
a difference by including your success story or voicing your overall support
for the alternative work schedule concept.
