1288.0. "HS Money Gift - need advise ASAP." by IMINMK::MCCALLION () Tue May 27 1997 10:18

    I am looking for advise as soon as possible.

    We are going to be giving $100 cash as gifts to a niece and a
    nephew for high school graduation.

    What demonation of bills do you think young people would like?

    1: $100 bill,
    2: 5 $20 bills,
    3: 10 $10 bills or
    4: 100 $1.00 bills?

    Please send mail!

    Thank  you.

    Give 'em the 100s.

    Give em savings bonds!
1288.3Cash for grads - $50s or $100PETST3::STOLICNYTue May 27 1997 17:567

    Personally, I think that savings bonds are OK for younger children
    where the spending is a ways off - but for highschool grads with
    near-term needs, a savings bond just doesn't seem as useful.

    Agreed. My grandparents still give me savings bonds. I'd rather have
    the $25.
1288.5American Express Gift CheckNNTPD::"[email protected]"Kristin BrennanWed May 28 1997 10:409
My suggestion would be to give them a $100.00 "Gift Check".
I know you can get them from the DCU.

But I do like the idea of 100 $1.00 bills. *8^)

    Something about a $100 bill makes it that much more special!
    (we are doing the same thing - and nobody wants bonds anymore!)

    You could always get a "Mall Gift Certificate" -- my son just got some
    of those as gifts. This way the student can visit whatever mall you
    get it from and use it in any store there for buying supplies or clothing
    or whatever he/she will need. Just note that you must have CASH to
    purchase these-- most malls will not take even a check to buy them.

    But I also agree -- a $100 bill will make an impression!

We were able to charge mall gift certificates with no problem.

    I too would give the $100 bill. The "hit me" impact of the $100 is
    more powerful than counting out 100 $1 bills.

    For a graduation gift, cash is nice. I paid my own way through college
    so money went for tuition, so a mall gift certificate would not have
    been as nice.

    I have to agree, the $100 bill would be a great gift. It's easy to
    walk into a fast food restaurant and pull out a couple one's, a five,
    or a ten dollar bill to pay for a coke. But even as an adult who's
    seen them several times, I think twice before I use a $100.

    I think the receiver would be more inclined to put that towards
    something special for him/herself like a car, a stereo, tuition, etc.
    Otherwise a gift check (like American Express which is sold at DCU)
    would be a runner-up since the receiver won't be confined to using it
    in a certain store or mall.

    Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I'm going to go with
    the $100 bill. The new ones do look a little fake though...

    Thanks again.

I think that's why they were redesigned, to be "different" and hard to fake!
