1250.0. "Suggestions for summer activities for 5-year-old?" by JARETH::ROESLER () Wed Feb 05 1997 14:48

Hi,

We're looking for some suggestions on how to handle summer activity
for our 5-year-old son (5 1/2 by the time summer rolls around). He
will be finishing up kindergarten in June (he's been in a full-day
private kindergarten), and this is the first summer that we'll have
to dream up a place (or places) for him to spend his time. My husband
and I both work full time.

I know that camp is an option, so I'd appreciate any recommendations
of good-quality day camps (we live in Reading, MA). Suggestions of less
conventional camps are welcome. We want him to be in an enjoyable
environment that's also stimulating -- not just an outdoor babysitting
service.

Are there other types of summer programs as well?

Thanks for any help you can give! (Are there any web sites that provide
this type of information?)

    merle,

ther are services that can help, through Digital. The worklife
Connections is wonderful. They have helped me several times in finding
summer care and now daycare for my new child. Their number is
800-635-0606. THey are great and will asked you some questions and
they explain their procedures clearly. Give them a try.

From my experience, a lot of sports clubs have summer camp
programs. The Y's usually has something, Cedardale Athletic
Club has a great program. Some private schools like Brooks
have summer camp program. There are also private camps
like Camp Evergreen located inside the Harold State Forest
in Andover. Our town, North Andover, has summer excel programs
and Andover has the equivalent program called Kaleidoscope.
You may want to check with your town community services if they
    can recommend some places.

We used 2 of the programs mentioned in the previous reply last summer.
My kids (5 and 6) both LOVED Kaleidoscope in Andover. They will probably
go back this year. The only drawbacks are that it's mostly indoors
without AC (kids didn't seem to mind), expensive and only lasts for 3
weeks.
They also attended the summer camp at Cedardale. We won't be doing
that one again.

Do you get the Boston Parent's Paper? You can pick it up at
the library; it has lots of good camp advertisements.

I found in there this pointer for the Brooks School, which
I investigated. I might do it next year, but will probably
keep my daughter with her friends at the extended summer kindergarten
    at her current school.
