1176.0. "He died very poor... I thought." by NETCAD::CREEGAN () Wed Aug 21 1996 11:05

    1175 is set nowrite.

    Didn't Beethoven die a pauper (poor) and was buried in
    a pauper's grave?

    Could he have been jailed for something of that caliber?

1176.1Mozart was in debt at deathENGPTR::ANDERSONThere's no such place as far awayWed Aug 21 1996 12:375
    I don't know about Beethoven, but Mozart died a pauper and was buried
    in the beggars lot. I don't think he spent any time in jail, but I'm
    not positive.

    I just checked the internet and I found all kinds of info on Beethoven,
    but I couldn't find anything that said he was in jail or was buried in
    a paupers grave.

    It did say that he had a lot of personal struggles including getting
    custody of his two brothers when his parents died, then fighting the
    legal system to achieve custody of his nephew when his brother died.

    Of course it mentioned his breakup with "the immortal beloved" and his
    fight with deafness, but that was it.

    Why was your child asking this question? Maybe she heard it from
    somewhere?!  That kid is inquisitive!

1176.3The Dog, perhaps?tun-12.imc.das.dec.com::HammCheryl Hamm (215)943-5380Wed Aug 21 1996 14:019
Wasn't the dog in the move kidnapped and locked in a cage? (I know that
happened in some kids movie I saw lately, I think it was one of the
Beethoven ones). Perhaps they were talking about the movie.

I guess a trip to the video store is in order. Actually, those movies are
probably in the public libraries by now.

My 5 year old is always thinking. The question came indirectly..

"Did he (the radio announcer) say 'Beethoven' ?"
"Yes, he did but I didn't hear what he said. Maybe he is going to play
something Beethoven wrote."
"That music isn't on my tape."
"Beethoven wrote a lot of music not just what is on your tape."
"Was Beethoven real ? "
"Yes, he was a real man who died a long time ago"
"Ashley was so wrong."
"What did Ashley say that was so wrong ?" asks an unsuspecting Mom while pulling
up in front of day care.
"She said Beethoven was in jail."
"Well, a long time ago, sometimes people who had no money got put in jail" says
a mom who thinks the other 5 year old probably does know something she doesn't..

Sounds like Ashley is talking about the dog. Thanks.
