1129.0. "ENTERTAINMENT APPROPRIATE FOR CHILDREN ?" by EVER::LALIBERTE (PSG/IAE - OGO) Thu Apr 25 1996 12:45

    I didn't know what topic to put this under.

    Has any one seen the BLUE MAN GROUP perform (currently in Boston)
    and is their performance art appropriate for children (i.e. 8-yr old).

    In their TV ad, they have a kid talking about it but I'd like some
    other feedback.

    thanks.

1129.1BMG was awesome!SUBPAC::SKALSKIThu Apr 25 1996 16:3617

    		I saw BMG a few weeks back. It was fantastic. I would
    	recommend it to anyone. Unfortunately to describe the performance
    	would be difficult and spoil some of the fun. It's sort of a
    	musical/three stooges/Gallagher/spacemen kinda show. The charles
    	playhouse is small so anywhere you sit will give a good view.
    	Lots of audience participation. I couldn't say anything negative
    	as far as not taking the kids. The drum beats and music might be
    	a little load but your ears won't be ringing like you left a rock
    	concert. All I can say is go see the show. Oh and if you get
    	seats in the first few rows (like I did), don't wear any fancy
    	clothes. The plastic poncho you get only works so well 8*)

1129.2One caveat...DANGER::ARRIGHILife is an else-if constructTue May 07 1996 13:5011
    I agree that Blueman Group is well worth seeing -- my 12 year old loved
    it and so did I. But as I mentioned in a note I put in the Theatre
    conference, there is one use of the "F" word during a recorded segment:
    A voice explains about fractals as they are projected on screens, and
    then (incongruously -- which is part of the humor) says that they are a
    "complete mind f---".

    These days it's probably no big deal, but I thought you should know ahead
    of time.

How was it for you?

Has anyone else gone to Blue Man Group? I'm thinking of taking my 8 year old
son to it.

    Great, great, great show. I think your son would enjoy it a lot. The
    music is awesome, there are some funny parts, although he won't
    understand it all. He won't really have to because there is so much to
    take in.

    The blue men all just stare, so if you're sitting close enough to the
    stage, it could freak him out a bit (it freaked me out, but you get
    used to it soon enough)

1129.6loved itOBSESS::COUGHLINKathy Coughlin-HorvathTue Feb 18 1997 17:5711

    I loved the show. There were many kids in the audience. The kids
    behind me were so young the parents were telling them what the words
    scrolling by were. I was in $50 seats and personally wouldn't pay that
    for kids who can't even read. As was said the music is terrific. What
    is so outstanding to me is the juvenile and wacky creativity and the
    number of adults anxious to pay $50 a ticket to experience this
    entertainment. I think the best seats are on the floor, center of the
    center, row ~5-~12.

    $50? I was told by my Ticketmaster agent that tickets are $35 and $45.
    (Maybe the $45 turns into $50 after tax and Ticketmaster surcharge.)

1129.8yup, the extras up the chargeOBSESS::COUGHLINKathy Coughlin-HorvathThu Feb 20 1997 14:343
    I think they are $45 and $35. My preference is if I can't get the best
    seats I don't go. And you are right, after tax and surcharge it was
    over $100 for 2 $45 tickets.

    *WOW*! We went last night and OHMY<DIETY> it was so much FUN!

    Our seats were orchestra (section D, row G) which put us back under the
    balcony overhang: not too bad, but there is action above the level of
    the stage and some of us had to lean forward and sideways to see it. I
    agree with Kathy that middle of the orchestra center would be ideal
    seating.

    We weren't expecting it to be so *funny* throughout!--though it's not
    relentless side-splitting antics; there are wry moments and surprises
    and some transfixing musical episodes... everybody, just go see it!
    Our party consisted of females aged 69, 48, 46 and 12, and I think we
    all enjoyed it equally. It was a bit loud in parts, and when they say
    strobe lights, they're *not kidding*--very strong ones, and for a
    protracted period of time. Way cool.
