1105.0. "Looking for Information" by WRLDYD::SANTOS () Mon Mar 11 1996 21:43

I'm entering this note for my sister. She's seven weeks
pregnant and because it was via an IUI procedure she had an
ultrasound done today. The ultrasound showed two fetus in
two separate sacs. One fetus shows a size of 6.3 weeks and
has a strong heartbeat. The other shows a size of 5.6 weeks
and has a slow, faint heartrate that could not be traced by
            the ultrasound.

The doctors have said that the status of the smaller fetus
would be more certain in three weeks but they weren't very
encouraging. If you know of a situation similar to this,
we'd be very interested in the outcome. Please feel free
to reply here or in mail.

1105.1not exactly the same but...STOWOA::SPERATue Mar 12 1996 09:0013
I don't know of an exact situation but I do know a woman who was
pregnant to twins and lost one. The other was born full term, healthy
    and happy.

A friend of mine spent time in the peace corp in Africa where she
encountered many women who said they had lost one twin. They accepted
    it as a natural occurrence.

Of course, we hope that both are going to be fine but even if the next
test brings difficult news re: the smaller one, there is reason to hope
in the long term viability of the pregnancy.

    Good luck.

My situation was only 1/2 similar. I had a pregnancy through IVF which
I eventually lost at 12 weeks. At 6 weeks I had the ultrasound and
they told me then that the fetus was not the right size. I think the
measurements were of sac size and heartbeat. They told me it was
possible for the fetus to catch up but the odds were stronger that I'd
lose it. It proably died around 10 weeks but I didn't know until 12.

Wishing your sister all the best.

1105.3I've been there...SALEM::ALEXANDER_DDon't stop believingThu Mar 14 1996 22:0731
Well, I think I may have some encouraging news here.

I too got pregnant via IVF a little over a year ago.
At my 1st US (about 6wks preg) they saw 2 definate
sacs and possibly a third. Only 1 sac had a strong
definate heartbeat in it. At my second US (about 5
days later almost 7wks pregnant) we still only
saw 2 sacs and 1 heartbeat. Finaly on our third
US (5 days later almost 8wks pregnant) we saw 2 sacs
with 2 definate heartbeats. One was a bit smaller than
the other and I was also bleeding during all of this so
I was very afraid I was miscarring.

The Dr. said one was just a bit behind the other and I'm
very happy to say we have heathy six month old twin girls now.

I know exactaly what your sister is going through...it's no
fun. Just be there to suppot her and hope and pray that
she will be as blessed as we were. The worst part is that
even once we saw the two strong heatrbeats I worried through
my entire pregnany that I would actualy have 2 healthy babies...
thats the games your mind plays with you when your body has
failed you for so long in just achiving a pregnancy.

Not sure were you or your sister is from but if she would like
to talk to me I'd be more than happy to...just send me a note
    off-line.

    Wishing your sister the best,

    Deb (Jordan Rae & Brooke Marie's Mommy 8-) 8-)

This is an update from the basenoter. My sister had a second
ultrasound and it found only one fetus. The baby looks strong
and healthy, so they're very thankful for that. Thanks for
all the responses here and offline. They were greatly appreciated.
