950.0. "Gangs" by CSC32::P_SO (Get those shoes off your head!) Fri Apr 28 1995 11:55
Yesterday, my son, 8, was playing basketball in the driveway with
his friend, I was in the house, I heard some loud talking and
laughing outside and went to the window to investigate and saw
a gang walking down the street. My son came running in the house
and told me that the boys in the gang had thrown rocks at he and
his friend and that they ran up the driveway and tried to grab the
basketball from them.
I immediately yelled down the street to the boys to stay away
from my kid. But, seeing as I have laryngitis, it didn't make
too much of an impact. I told Nathan that if he ever sees a
gang coming down the street that he should immediately come in the
house and not to worry about his toys...they can have them, we
can buy new ones.
This was my reaction at the time, but now, I'm getting more and
more concerned as I think about it. I don't know if others have
problems with gangs in their neighborhoods but, how do you handle
it? How do you explain gangs and their dangers to your child
without making them frightened of ever going outside.
The gangs in our neighborhood pretty much keep to themselves and
have never done any damage to our property but they are getting
more and more bold. How do you protect your children?

Do you these boys live in your neighborhood or they were
just wandering by? How old are they?
If they live in the neighborhood, maybe you can get to
know them, as a neighbor/friend and not as an authority figure.
You can't fix/change their behavior, but you can get yourself
off their black list if you acknowledge their presence and
just accept them as they are. Most gangs are formed because
the kids feel misunderstood and neglected by adults; they
want people to notice them by causing trouble.

| Eva,
Good advice. I don't recognize them from our neighborhood. I
think they may have just been wandering around. They were
teenagers, I think around 14 or 15 years old. All dressed in
black.
I have made a point of being nice to the boys that walk by on
their way home from school. I always say, "Hi, how was school."
And they smile back.
I do plan on calling the police if they ever try to hurt my son
again but I will try to let them know that I am not the enemy.

950.3 | passive/agressive way to dispose of gang | CSC32::A_STEINDEL | | Wed May 31 1995 13:43 | 17 |
| My husband and I noticed a small group of gang members hanging
out in the drainage ditch right near our house making a rucus
and smoking various stuff, harassing the kids. So the next time
we saw them show up, we got on our bicycles and rode em right
next to where they were sitting and just pretended we were
talking to each other, didn't pay any attention to them or make
eye contact. They finally got sick of us hanging around, so they
got up and started heading through the neighborhood. We started
to follow them - still not paying any attention to them or
looking at them- pretending we were out for a nice afternoon
bike ride. We followed them all the way to their houses so we
know where they live. We then made eye contact with them to
make our point (they dont know where we live). Haven't seen
them since. But boy did we have a good time making them
uncomfortable!
