934.0. "Pregnancy test -ve,+ve & -ve" by ATANU::RICH () Sun Apr 09 1995 20:43

Hi,

This is about my wife, She is taking infertility treatment from a Gyn. She gets
periods once in 6 months if she doesn't take provera or something. She had
undergone laproscopic operation on Nov'94. After that also she didn't get
periods. Prgnency test was negative hence Dr. gave her provera and she got
periods on Jan'31. Dr put her in Clome treatment. Since she didn't get
periods until Mar 17 we went for pregnency test and it was negative. We got
appointment on 28th with Dr. On that day Dr asked to go for one more pregnency
test. To our surprise it was positive. We were very happy. But in back of my
mind I had some doubts since my wife doesn't have an symptoms and I got a home
test kit on Apr 7th and it was negative. I rang up Dr and told her about
this then she asked to go for one more blood test. That night itself we went
and it was negative. When we got back to Dr. she told she doesn't know why the
previous test was positve and she asked to take the medication to get the
periods.

I would like to know is it possible to get -ve after a +ve in the blood test.

Even the Doctor could not explain the reason for it.
If it is mistake from lab what should I do?

After 10 days of dreams it had become terrible for us to know again we need to
undergo all the treatments.

It must be very hard to go through infertility treatments
and not to be able to trust the 'lack of period' as meaning
    you are pregnant.

My wife and I also went through years of various treatments.
But each month her period would come, and we would mourn
    the death of our dream.

We did the GIFT treatment twice, where her eggs are removed from
the ovaries and fertilized in a dish and then placed back in
the ends of the fallopian tubes. The second time we did that,
we went in for a blood test that showed she was pregnant. We
were overjoyed for a few days. And then her period started just
    like 'normal'.

The test measures the existance of certain hormones. I suspect these
can result from the fertilization of the egg and sperm. We assumed
in my wife's case that the fertilized egg had not attached to the
uterine wall and her pregnancy did not 'take'. These pregnancy
tests are VERY sensitive, and probably over the years she would have
measured 'positive' many times. But she was never really pregnant.

Years later my wife got pregnant when we were not doing any
medical interventions at all. We had by then adopted 3 kids, and this
was quite a shock. Since then we have carefully used birth control,
perhaps quite unnecessarily. Its all quite a mystery.

Hi Chan,

	I too took fertility drugs, Pergonal, and experienced a - + -.
Yes, it was extremely disheartening. In my case I had a
negative home pregnancy test, followed by a faintly positive one
a couple days later. A few days after that I had a positive blood
test and really believed I was pregnant. Unfortunately, about a week
later I had another blood test and it showed that I was NOT pregnant.
It was just a case of fertilization without implantation as mentioned
	in .1.

However, I successfully (almost too successfully, see 455) became
pregnant with the help of Pergonal immediately following that
experience and have a wonderful 21 month year old son. I attempted
one more cycle last year and now have a set of 6 month old twins,
a boy and a girl. So, despite having no monthly cycles (without drugs)
for the past 6 years, I was able to have a beautiful, at times
	crazy, family.

Good Luck,
Nancy
