901.0. "Federal Tax Forms" by MKOTS1::HYNES () Thu Feb 09 1995 12:37

    Has anyone had any luck finding the Federal tax form used to deduct
    child care?  I believe it's form 2441.  I've checked a few libraries
    and post offices but they didn't carry them.

    Thanks in advance,

    It should be included in the federal tax booklet. I think I might have
    an extra one. Where are you located, I'll send it to you.

You can call 1-800-TAX-FORM to order IRS forms and publications. It'll be
a couple of weeks till you get them.

    Even if they are out of individual copies, many libraries have a master
    book of tax forms and instructions that can be photocopied. A word of
    caution, though, is that the sooner you do it, the better your chances.
    It's amazing to see the number of missing pages increase as April 15th
    approaches.

    I thought it was $2500/per child. Is this correct?

    I am also looking for a 2441 form. If anyone has an extra, please send
    me mail.

    Thanks..

    Cj,

    We are allowed $2400 per child, maximum allowed is $4800. So if
    you have more than 2 children, it doesn't matter!

901.8After school care?AIMTEC::BURDEN_DA bear in his natural habitatMon Sep 25 1995 13:354
Can we deduct the after school care for our son (1st grade)? We pay this to the
public school, not to a day care.

   Dave,

   I do - just be sure to get the school's tax-payer id (or in my case,
   tax-exempt #) and treat it like regular day-care.

    You can also deduct for Kindergarten if you pay for it. It's not a
    required grade in Mass so therefore is considered daycare.

    You can deduct, as "Dependant Care Expenses", any expenses that were
    incurred for your dependant to be cared for WHILE YOU WORKED, {or were
    looking for work - not positive about that piece}

    So, if you were unemployed, and had daycare, you couldn't deduct it.

    Even if you paid your mother, you could deduct it - if it's "personal"
    it's usually worth having a conversation with the provider so that they
    know ahead of time that you're going to claim it, so that they make
    sure they declare it. And if you DON'T have the I.D., it's more of a
    hassle for the IRS, but they'll allow the deduction - you MUST provide
    their name and last known address.
