889.0. "Playground designs" by POKIE::DIFIORE () Thu Jan 26 1995 13:06

    I have been asked to help plan a new playground for my daughter's
    Elementary school. Has anyone worked with any of the playground design
    specialist who go around the country consulting and managing playground
    projects? Any names and phone numbers would be appriciated.

    Also if you have a plyground at your school that you think is well
    designed or unique would you please take some pictures of it and send
    me a set. We are planning on putting together a display to get the
    kids thinking about what should be in the new playground.

    The names of any reference books you may be aware of would also be
    appriciated. The names/numbers of any vendors you were satisfied with.

    Any thing you might want to send can be mailed to:

    Thank you in advance for any help you are able to provide.

I'll check with my sister who when through this process in Milton, MA. I'm not
sure who she got to do the final design but I'll check.

(fyi it was never built because the location was protested by three elderly
people who lived close to the area and though it would lower their property
value)

889.2let the big kids play tooCOOKIE::MARTINLife is tradeoffsFri Feb 03 1995 11:4911
    I have a suggestion:

    make sure that things are built so that parents can play with their
    children. Many big designs dont allow for this, and it is very difficult
    to run all the way around it to find your child, since a normal sized
    adult often cant fit thru/over/under/whatever.

    My son enjoys things like this much more if one parent participates
    at least part of the time.

889.3watch your liabilities...NOTAPC::PEACOCKFreedom is not free!Mon Feb 06 1995 10:1914
   Also, look into the liability issues carefully when deciding who will
   actually design and build it. We had a situation around here where a
   group of local parents (and other folks, I think) put up the
   playground. Later on, someone got hurt and there were lawsuits
   pending against the school (it was the playground for an elementary
   school) as well as against the parents who put it up.

   I don't know what the outcome of all the legal crap was, but its
   something to think about if any local group of parents was considering
   doing the work themselves.

   fwiw,

   - Tom

RE: .2

I have first hand experience with this not fitting in the
playground structures. While 7 months pregnant, I became
stuck in the playground at Pepperill, MA elementary
school.  Very embarassing.

At the time, Elise wasn't yet two. I asked to her find
one of the grown-ups and tell him/her I needed help.
She did great. The grown-ups were very amused.

889.5I agree, make it so parents can fit.LETHE::TERNULLOWed Apr 26 1995 12:3314
	I just went to a very nice playground yesterday with my 2year old
	and 2month old. I had the little one in a snugli, so I could follow my
	2year old around easily, but when she went into the maze of a castle
	I couldn't follow her and got very nervous about her falling somewhere
	deep inside this structure. I like playgrounds that have lots of
	climbing things but allow the parents to follow along on the outside
	or are wide enough for the parents to climb through. Luckily my
	sister-in-law was with me and she could climb in and follow Kristen
	along. But my sister-in-law is thin, I can't imagine anyone with
	any height or size fitting through there.

	Good Luck
