| Jim,
Funny you bring it up - I was just observing the same thing. I was
surprised by it, but I guess it doesn't particularly bother me, so I
doubt that I'd call.
One thing that might help your personal plight, is I've seen a device
you can attach to your TV, that actually turns off the volume when
commercials are on. Apparantly commercials air at a different
wave-length or strength (or something like that), and this device can
interpret that, and will turn your tv to "mute" until it picks up the
original signal again. Haven't seen one recently, but maybe someplace
like Radio Shack could help .....

I don't watch prime time network TV that much, most of the shows
during that time of the day do not have much redeeming value for
children. Star Trek, Lois and Clark (Superman) are exceptions, IMO.
My daughter is 9 and she can watch any show on Disney, Discovery
and Nickoleon, limited to 1 hour of TV a day during the week, after
she finishes her homework and chores. But, she is so busy that she
hardly has time for TV.
We, the parents, don't want TV that much, other than the news,
financial and sports programs, documentaries and movies. So, we don't
have too many problems.
As far as language is concerned, I don't find the words you mentioned
foul. I use those words once in a while myself. Worse things come out
of my mouth when I get behind the wheel in Boston ;-) I don't make a big
deal of them. My daughter has heard these words, she knows what they
mean since I explained them to her and she has never used them, at least
in front of us ;-). I guess, my philosophy is that if my daughter is
going to learn the "bad" things, she will better off learning them from
me.
All in all, I don't believe network TV or too much of any TV is for
good young kids. Of course, it is up to the parents to decide what kind
of information their kids get. Turning the TV off is not a bad option
in my opinion.

| We noticed the foul language increase as well, so has my 3 1/2 year old
"foul language policegirl". We watch a few commedies while we
play with our daughter at night and we've noticed shes not watching,
but when they say a foul word, she shouts out "they said a naughty
word"...."that's naughty behavior"! We think she has big ears on all
naughty words these days.

You know, after I read the base reply... I made a mental note to see if
anything my son watches are loosening up their standards.
Simpsons last night.. Bart, "what in hell is going on here!"
I almost fell off my seat.
Now not to say that words like this don't come out of my mouth or my
husbands, and it probably wouldn't of been so bad if Homer said it but
this was to me, giving children the message that its o.k. to say things
like this.
I was not happy at all obviously and will monitor my sons TV choices
much more closely.
A nick fan --
