853.0. "Looking for special home for toys.." by ICS::WALKER () Tue Nov 15 1994 09:49

    >> This may not belong here. I couldn't think of a more appropriate
place to enter it. Feel free to move if necessary <<

Mt family is packing up our home in the hopes to be moving soon. It's
amazing how much 'stuff' collects over the years, and how many baby
items are acquired. In our need to purge our home I have decided to
make up several boxes of toys no longer (if ever) played with by my
son. Having been involved with Discovery Toys for the past year I have
    acquired far too many...

With the holidays rapidly approaching, I am looking for suggestions of
shelters, programs or places that would benefit most from some nice toys,
and baby items - all in VERY good state.

If there is a particular place that pulls at your heart strings - let
me know. I have lost all affiliation with any programs I was involved
    with in the past.

Please let me know here or : ICS::WALKER or dtn: 2231646

Suggestions should be made for places in and around the northern
through western suburbs of Boston, please. - Sarah

    Sarah,

I would like to put in a plug for battered womens shelters. Frequently
the families in shelters show up with only the clothes on their backs.
The kids need toys, diapers, formula, shampoos, clothing, blankets,
    etc.

Look in the yellow pages under Domestic Violence in your local area.

One of my favourite places for this sort of thing is Women, Inc., a
substance abuse treatment center located in Roxbury/Dorchester, Mass.

Both outpatient and residential programs focus on enabling women to
keep their children with them, or regain custody in some cases, during
the rehabilitation process. [rehab also includes ending dependency upon
public assistance, special programs and treatment for pregnant addicts,
    outreach job training/matching programs]

One of the outgrowths of the mission has been a childcare center that is
one of the few especially certified for children at risk [from violence,
    substance abuse, etc.]

So both the resident children and other children in the childcare
center would benefit from any kindly gift.

Would anyone else like to contribute with me? Maybe we could really
make something wonderful happen here for some families.....

There are a couple of places that I can think of off the top...

One (maybe several) of the local correctional institutes (MCI
Lancaster, I think) does have women inmates... I know that our church
has, in the past, donated toys to one of these places - I think it was
for the inmates to have something to give their kids.

There is also Kairos House, in Clinton. This is a crisis pregnancy
center in the area. I've seen their request list in the past, and it
often includes stuff for infants like diapers and such... they may
have a need for baby toys as well.

   Regards,

   - Tom

    Hi --

There's a place in Worcester called Faith House (my aunt is the
Director) which is a residence for women recovering from alcohol and
chemical dependency. Their children live in the house with them.
I'm sure they could use any toys and baby items that you would like to
    donate.

That's a great idea BTW & very nice of you.
