My son also received information on this program. From what I can gather John Hopkins is interested in children that have demonstrated strong math or english skills. My son had scored 98% in math when he took his CATs (California Aptitude Tests) as a sixth grader. He then qualified to take his SATs this pass January as a seventh grader. We felt that this would be a good experience for him to familiarize himself with what taking SATs was all about so that he could be better prepared when having to take them for college. I believe the cost was $20. to John Hopkins and $25. for the actual SAT application. If you score well on the SAT John Hopkins then provides you with many opportunities such as earning college credits early. My son did well however not well enough. He still however periodically gets mail from John Hopkins with various information. My son also received an opportunity to participate in the Student to Student Ambassador Program. I believe this was in relation to having his name with John Hopkins. We went to a meeting on this and basically what it was was that students who had received an invitation to participate in this program could select to go through a series of interviews to actually get into the program. If accepted, they would have an opportunity to travel to another country for 3 weeks during the summer. This year they were going to visit Great Britain and Scotland. They have gone to places like Russia in the past. This was costly.. I believe it was in the vicinity of $3000.. My son decided not to try to get into this program ... I must admit I was rather relieved when I realized the cost. I guess if your child has the opportunity to be recognized by John Hopkins he has nothing to lose. Granted taking SATs can be intimidating but it is good experience. The information that you received can also be of benefit. Nancy

A few years back, at the request of his sixth-grade teacher, my son took the upper-level SSAT test for the Johns Hopkins CTY (younger) program. Based on his scores, he qualified in math and verbal to attend the summer program, but, he really wanted to go to soccer camps instead... so that's what he did. ...nothing like a bright soccer player, right? As the teacher put it, "there's nothing to lose, even if he does poorly on the test." And, as it turned out, there wasn't. The fact that he did qualify, even as a sixth grader, was a positive when he applied to secondary schools. I saw a show on TV within the past year on the Discovery Channel discussing the Johns Hopkins CTY program and was totally blown away with the kinds of kids in the program. They were "way out there...!" And in my ramblings, I came across this URL (used with Mosaic or LYNX) for information about Johns Hopkins' CTY program: gopher://jhuniverse.hcf.jhu.edu:10005/11/.gifted - Jim
