816.0. "BUTTERFLY FARM?" by LJSRV2::MULLINAX () Wed Aug 31 1994 17:07

My mother recently saw on TV something about a place in
Westford called the "Butterfly Farm?". Can anyone tell me
about it, how is it, how much, hours, etc....

Thanks for any info you share.

The Butterfly Place is a green house you can walk through, and you
can see butterflies in various stages of development. They even land on
you!

You get there from route 3, taking the Westford Rd. Tyngsboro exit.
Go right if you are coming from the north, or left if from the south.
At a fork in the road, go left.
Just after crossing into Westford (there is a little marker like a street
sign), the museum is on the right. There is a long driveway down a hill,
and a little sign for the "Butterfly Place" or "Pappilon Park".

The butterflies are more active when it is sunny than when it is cloudy,
but it is a greenhouse, so when it is really hot they also get sluggish.

My family went there last Wednesday when it was sunny but cool, and had
a good time. They saw some butterflies mating and one laying eggs.

I think that they close after Columbus Day.

Don't know hours, etc.

The day care my kids went to went there as field trips a couple of
times. They loved it. They even got to bring a cocoon back to the
school. The school has a wonderful picture of a student with the new
butterfly on his/her shorts. The expression on the student is
priceless - a combination of wonder, excitement, fear, joy....

Around $5 or $6. Note that it is VERY muggy in there; I recommend a
tank top and shorts as MAXIMUM clothing!

The Townsend Public Library has a free pass for two which residents
can take out. The wife and I got in for free, 3 yr old was $5. I had
been reading about butterflies so the trip was for me! I don't think
I would have enjoyed it as much at full price ...

Check with your library. Lots of free passes but often a waiting list.

wow....$5 to see butterflies? seems pretty expensive to me.

here in New England, its heavy Monarch catepillar season. Any
area with Milkweed plants is loaded with Monarch catepillars.
If you bring the catepillars (and some milkweed leaves for them
to eat) and put them in a jar, it wont be long until they form
a chrysalis (sp?)...and then about a week and the butterfly
    will emerge.

We've got about 20 catepillars in various stages in our house...we
keep them in an empty aquarium until they form the chrysalis and then
we hang the hard chrysalis from the ceiling in our kitchen.
Our kids love to see the butterflies come out and fly around
    the house.

If you are feeling adventurous, wear a bright yellow or lime-green
shirt or pants. You will be wearing butterflies shortly after entering
the greenhouse. They will literally think you are a flower. This is how
they find food in the wild, and from the places like this I have seen,
in the greenhouse (note the color of the containers of sugar water).
This can scare some young children, being 'attacked', so dress
    appropriately.
