797.0. "BLADDER???" by AKOCOA::SALLET () Fri Aug 05 1994 09:29

My 3 year old son has been complaining the last day or two that his
penis hurts (no kidding here folks). Last nite after his bath we
tried to take a look at things and we believe everything looks ok
although my husband thought he saw some "puffiness" and perhaps a
little redness. I perhaps should mention that he toilet trained only
about a month ago and sometimes I think he may grab himself a bit too
much - although for the most part he appears careful with it.

This morning as I was dropping him off at daycare he decided to take
a trip into the bathroom and peed. Up until that point he was FINE.
He sometimes gripes about going to school but not today. As a matter
of fact he was anxious for us to drop off his brother and get settled
in his room. But boy right after he peed the tears came and he kept
saying it hurt and we had to stand there for a while before he would
even let me pull his underwear and shorts back up. After about 10
minutes he appeared fine. I did think to take a look at the color
of the urine in the toilet and it was grayish in color - but I also
know that they treat the toilets in the morning with a cleaner and it
typically stays into the bowl until that first flush so it could be
    a coincidence as well.

I guess what I'm asking here is does anyone have a clue as to what his
problem may be? What are bladder infection symptoms? He has
complained of a belly ache now and then too, but again, 5 minutes later
he's up and playing. I will call our pedi too but thought I'd ask if
anyone out there thinks this is in fact "something".

I would say it's definately cause to call the pedi. I've had
bladder infections and one main symtom that I really hated was
how much it hurt to "Pee". Then the pain would stay for a while and
I hated to get off the toilet until the pain would seem to "calm"
down. But, there was still a more constant need to feel like I
needed to "go", even if I couldn't.

Is he drinking enough water? It's been pretty hot, I don't
know where you live but this heat will dehydrate a person faster,
this will make the urine stronger. The pain may not be an infection
    but less "diluted" urine.

I personally would have the pediatrition check it out, it's
obvious your husband and your are concerned. It would probably make
you feel better to find out that it's just strong urine from
not drinking enough fluids, or if it is something like an infection.

If you find that he's maybe not being "gentle" with himself, then
maybe your husband or even the pediatrician could gently talk to him
    about that....

        Good luck,

I called our pedi and the nurse suspects a urinary tract or bladder
infection. They will be seeing him this morning.

Thanks for the response. Yes, he drinks LOTS of water. He's a camel.

Another symptom of a UTI (Urinary tract infection) is that the urine
tends to be cloudy, and can have a strong odor (but doesn't have to).
If it's a worse infection, or 'higher up' (say a kidney infection),
there also can be blood, which would look more like a small 'string' if
    you looked in the toilet.

I've had a few kidney infections, and they can cause a stomache ache,
and if left untreated, can make it so you can barely walk because your
back hurts. A couple days of antibiotics and life is wonderful again
(but finish 'em all just to be sure!).

They also suggest that cranberry juice (for whatever reason) helps
    clear the infection faster.

Good Luck! It DOES hurt, and a hug helps a lot!

         Hi,

I've heard the cranberry juice one. I drink it off and on and
haven't had and infection in a long time. I was told there was some
enzyme in the cranberries that prevents the growth of whatever it
is that causes urinary infections. It's acts as a medication against
    it.

Something else to look for in either a bladder infection, a UTI, or a
    kidney infection is a fever.

My son had a similar problem a couple of years ago - but he had a slight UTI &
also a slight infection just under his foreskin (which did not retract very
well at all back then) - 2 different antibiotics to clear it up.

797.7Sounds like yeast infection!FTNESS::NDYERTue Aug 09 1994 15:5814
My son had similar problem/symptoms when he was 3 also. Shortly after
he was trained his penis started getting red alot. Sometimes the
redness went all the way up the penis and it hurt when he peed too.
Anyhow, my pedit said it was very common with little ones and in
boys it showed up this way (on the outside). It was a yeast infection.
Lotrimin does the trick. Over the counter and we went thru a whole
tube in a year or so and now it doesn't happen much anymore. Patrick
is 5 years old now. Anytime he complains of a sensitive penis, we
just use the Lotrimin and he is fine overnight. First check should
    be with the pedi tho.

How did you makeout with the pediatrician???

797.8ALL BETTER...AKOCOA::SALLETWed Aug 10 1994 10:158
Sorry it's taken me a while to get back. We did take our son to the
Pedi and it was not a UTI or Bladder infection but instead something
called Balentisis (I'm sure I spelled it wrong). Basically it was
a yeast infection - evidently making it painful to pee. He's all set
now. Dr suspects that a probable cause was that he was spending lots
of time in the ocean (and then the pool), never completely drying off,
sitting in a damp suit and thus never properly dried off and the end
    result was the infection.

Nudists have always maintained that it makes no sense to put on clothes to go
swimming -- that they're pointless and awkward in the water, and it's unhealthy
(and uncomfortable) to sit around in this damp garment afterwards. It's
interesting to hear a concrete example.
