788.0. "Now it's call a Triple Test" by ODIXIE::RICHARDSON (Are we there yet??) Mon Jul 25 1994 17:49
I just thought I'd enter a note here to update the information that I
have on the Triple Test (as it's now called) - testing
Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and estriol
(uE3). I had one done today (I am 35) and am 15 weeks pregnant. The
pamphlet I have says that it can be performed any time between 14 and
21 weeks after the first day of your last menstrual period. The
results of the test are generally available to your physician within 48
to 96 hours.
All this is from the pamphlet that I have. It sounds like the test has
changed somewhat (time of testing & name) and I just wanted to update
the info.
Everyone has their own reasons for having the test. I personally just
want all the information I can get and tend to worry a lot. I do
understand the high incidences of false positives but will still worry
if it does come back extremely high or low. Hopefully it will do no
more than reassure me that the baby is developing normally.
