Our 4 year old daughter has diagnosed by a dermatologist with something called the "uncombable hair syndrome". This is a real problem - she really has very little hair and what she does have is very light and fine. The doctor suggested (he has actually never treated anyone for this) the use of a vitamin called Biotin and a Biotin based shampoo - both of which he said may not do anything and/or she might just grow out of anyway - but that wouldn't be for a number of years and in the meantime we are concerned about how she will feel about herself as she gets older and goes to school, etc. We are going to think about getting another opinion and we will stay on the Biotin routine for now but has anyone had any experience with this and if so how did you deal with it, or more importantly how did your child deal with it? Please send me mail offline if you prefer. Barry

Does her scalp hurt if you try to comb it? Does the hair fall out? Clay

I have a sense that the hair will not comb into any style, but just goes its own way irrespective of any efforts to the contrary. perhaps a very androgynous easy care haircut? A good hairdresser could probably assist.

Barry, There is a doctor in the Bay area here who runs a nationally syndicated radio talk show, and I remember him discussing this once. If I remember correctly, he talked about causes, and referenced a medical journal article which discussed potential cures. If you want to try to call in, here are the details: Dr. Dean Edell 1-800-548-8255 Show runs from 1-2 pm PST Good luck to you and your daughter, Lynn |
